Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 55 | Overall: 40

The Mariners’ activity in the 2024 international signing period started with Dawel Joseph being the headliner, getting $3.3 million in January. Six months later, they added Shen, signing the Taiwanese right-hander, for $175,000 in July. Pitching at age 21, Shen was rolled out cautiously, making his debut in the Arizona Complex League last May. After 28 dominant innings over seven appearances, he earned a bump up to full-season ball for nine more starts.

Right out of the gate, Shen displayed a feel for commanding all three of his pitches. His fastball sits in the low 90s, touching 95 mph now and again, and he throws it with sink to help get ground ball outs. His mid-80s changeup also gets weak contact on the ground and gets a lot of chase. He can spin an 81 mph slider decently, and it missed bats at the lower levels, but a little more power could make it even nastier.

Shen filled up the strike zone in both stops during his debut, though he was getting too much of the plate during his time in Modesto. Some added strength to his 6-foot-3 frame would help not only that slider, but all of his offerings trend upwards. He has back-of-the-rotation potential based on his pitchability and projection.

2025

While most of the buzz around an international signing period centers around when it opens in January, that doesn’t mean teams stop scouting and signing players from around the globe. Case in point is Shen, who signed with the Mariners for $175,000 last July as part of the 2024 signing class. The 21-year-old Taiwanese right-hander officially embarked on his pro career stateside this May in the Arizona Complex League.

A 6-foot-3 hurler with a starter profile, Shen has a solid frame and displays excellent athleticism on the mound. The stuff may not wow anyone, but his feel for pitching might. He’ll typically sit around 92 mph with his fastball and can touch 95. He has an above-average changeup he sells well with good deception. He has feel for spinning a slider, but there’s not quite enough power or bite on the breaker just yet.

All of Shen’s stuff does play up because he can throw all three offerings for strikes and knows how to miss bats by mixing his repertoire well and keeping hitters off-balance. His ceiling might be a bit limited, but his pitchability could help him move a bit more quickly and become a back-end starter in the big leagues.
