Scouting Report

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 55 | Run: 40 | Arm: 50 | Field: 45 | Overall: 45

The Pirates found McAdoo all the way down in the 13th round of the 2023 Draft out of San Jose State, a pick that immediately paid dividends with his hot start in the Minors. McAdoo was eventually dealt to the Blue Jays for Isiah Kiner-Falefa at the Trade Deadline, and while he struggled with Double-A New Hampshire down the stretch, his full ‘24 line between High-A and Double-A left McAdoo with an .843 OPS and 17 home runs over 124 games.

That doesn’t quite capture McAdoo’s power ceiling, which is his calling card. Beyond Orelvis Martinez, McAdoo has one of the best power tools in the system and immediately impressed the Blue Jays with his bat speed. McAdoo produces much of this naturally with his big, physical frame, so he’ll be a fun project for the Blue Jays hitting coaches as they work to get him driving the ball in the air as consistently as possible. McAdoo’s defense at third base is still very much a work in progress, so it remains to be seen whether he’ll stick there, try more second base or eventually slide to first. He tried out right field in both systems last year too.

McAdoo will need to hit his way up the ladder, but he has one of the highest-upside bats in the system, so that’s a fine starting point. His pure bat speed should help him handle velocity and more advanced breaking balls, but he’ll likely always be a “power-over-hit” prospect. With that in mind, sorting out McAdoo’s defensive profile will be a big priority in 2025.

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 40 | Arm: 50 | Field: 45 | Overall: 45

The 2023 Draft will forever be known as the Paul Skenes Draft in Pittsburgh, and rightfully so. But that doesn’t mean the Pirates didn't found other potential big league talent throughout the rounds. They took a low-risk flier on McAdoo in Round 13 out of San Jose State, and he made a strong first impression with a .923 OPS in 28 games with Single-A Bradenton during his summer debut. He got off to an equally impressive start with a move up a level to High-A Greensboro during his first full season, and after keeping things rolling at Double-A Altoona, he was dealt to the Blue Jays at the Trade Deadline in a straight-up swap for Isiah Kiner-Falefa.

A big and strong right-handed hitter, McAdoo surprised evaluators with his overall feel for hitting and ability to impact the baseball. He’s shown he can handle velocity and routinely turns in quality at-bats with a patient approach and limited chase. That’s allowed him to consistently find the barrel and drive the ball with above-average exit velocities, and he could grow into average power eventually.

Mostly a second baseman in college, McAdoo has good hands and decent arm strength that give him the chance to stick on the dirt, and he exceeded expectations at third this season. He likely is better suited for first or a corner outfield spot when all is said and done, but it’s his bat that has helped him raise his profile.
