Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50

Soto entered the summer showcase circuit as an intriguing high school pitcher, one who had outgrown shortstop to become one of those projectable right-handers worth keeping an eye on. By the end of it, after stops at events like the PDP League and Major League Baseball's High School All-American Game, not to mention a dominant outing at the East Coast Professional Showcase, he had a huge up arrow next to his name, though he wasn't quite as dominant during his senior year.

Now 6-foot-5, Soto does check off a lot of boxes, including his size, stuff and the fact that he'll still be 17 come Draft time. All of his stuff is trending upwards, starting with an electric fastball that has flirted with triple digits and was regularly up to 98 mph over the summer, thrown with excellent life. Both of his secondary offerings have the chance to be at least better-than-average, with a hard slider that features late, hard bite and a splitter he uses as a changeup.

With a very quick arm, the Central Florida recruit throws everything hard, all from a prototypical starting pitcher's frame, while showing off solid command. The Florida prepster's name is still coming up in conversations about the top high school pitchers in the class with a strong spring.

2024

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50

Initially a shortstop who pitched a little, Soto got too big for the premium position and really started to focus on the mound, showing off stuff plus projection throughout the summer showcase circuit in 2022. He may have been more effective then compared to his senior year of high school outside of Orlando, but the Twins saw enough to take him No. 34 overall in the 2023 Draft and sign him for full slot, $2.48 million. They didn't send him out to pitch last summer as he's focused on getting acclimated to being a professional pitcher.

Soto's combination of size, pure stuff and age -- he'll pitch nearly all of 2024 at 18 -- is extremely intriguing. The 6-foot-5 right-hander's fastball is already regularly up to 98 mph and flirting with triple digits, a four-seamer with good life, and now he's adding a real power mid-90s sinker to go along with it. He's also working on refining what's already a good hard slider with cutter-like action to give him something with more east-west movement to go along with the fastball. His split-change has good fade to it and gives him a third at least average pitch.

It's a power repertoire all coming from a very quick arm, and Soto's athleticism as a former infielder helps him repeat his delivery and points to the ability to throw strikes consistently. The Twins will be patient given his age and his lack of experience as a full-time pitcher, but he has all the ingredients to be a big league starter.

Though he wasn't quite as dominant during his senior year, his name was mentioned among the top prep arms in the country, landing him with the Twins in the Competitive Balance Round A and earning him a full-slot bonus of $2.48 million.

Now 6-foot-5, Soto does check off a lot of boxes, including his size, stuff and the fact that he was still 17 at the time of the Draft.
