Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 55 | Overall: 40

The best player to ever come out of Northeastern University in Massachusetts is Carlos Peña, a first-rounder back in 1998, and outfielder Mike Sirota became the first Huskies hitter since then to be taken in the top five rounds when he was a third-round selection of the Reds last year. After a 2023 freshman year that saw him hit 13 homers and steal 32 bases, Maldonado seemed certain to join that select group. Even though he put a rough sophomore year behind him with excellent production this year, questions about his hit tool made him less of a top-round slam dunk.

Maldonado does check off a lot of boxes in terms of strength, athleticism and raw tools. The 6-foot-3 right-handed hitter is a presence in the box, and there’s plenty of raw power for him to tap into. He’s gotten to it more this year than as a sophomore, allowing him to climb to among the career home run leaders at Northeastern. While he does draw a ton of walks, the strikeout rate is concerning to scouts, though that did improve a bit in conference play this season.

A plus runner who routinely records elite-level times to first base, Maldonado is a definite basestealing threat. That speed also helps him cover a lot of ground in the outfield, where he has every chance to stick in center field and develop into a plus defender. He hasn’t improved his overall hit tool from his freshman year the way some scouts may have hoped, but the overall tool package is sure to be enticing to many teams.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 55 | Overall: 40

Maldonado had a record-setting career at Northeastern, setting a freshman mark with 13 homers in 2023 and a career standard with 86 steals over three years. Swing-and-miss concerns dropped him to the seventh round in July, where the Giants were glad to scoop him up for $287,400. He could be a steal if he makes consistent contact in pro ball.

A right-handed hitter, Maldonado doesn't chase pitches out of the zone too often but swings and misses at strikes more than he should, particularly against breaking balls. Even if he doesn't produce high batting averages, his ability to draw walks should enable him to post healthy on-base percentages. His plus raw power plays to all fields, though he doesn't pull the ball in the air often enough to make the most of it.

Maldonado is a plus runner with basestealing aptitude. His quickness also helps him cover ground in center field, where he's a solid defender with an average arm. He broke into pro ball as a right fielder at Single-A, moving to the corner in deference to fellow 2025 draftee Trevor Cohen.
