The Leiter family has done more to produce big league arms than some Division I college programs, and Cam Leiter is the latest with a chance to get there. He’s the nephew of Al and Mark (so, cousins with Mark Jr.) and his dad Kurt pitched at Oklahoma State and spent parts of four seasons in the Minors. Cam started his college career at Central Florida, and after an uneven freshman season, he transferred to Florida State, where he showed off his power stuff, and command issues, but only for seven starts because of a shoulder issue that has kept him from the mound all spring.
When he’s healthy, Leiter has a lot to offer a future Major League team. He’s a big, physical 6-foot-5 right-hander with huge stuff. He has the chance to have four legitimate pitches, starting with an explosive fastball that he cranks up to 98 mph and averaged 95 mph last year, throwing it with excellent extension. His upper-80s slider is a true out pitch with huge spin and tilt. He can land his slower, 80-mph curve for strikes and has some feel for a changeup as well.
The two main question marks surrounding Leiter are his ability to find the strike zone, with a 6.2 BB/9 rate over two years, and his health, which lead to some reliever risk concerns. It seems unclear what his prognosis is, with some talk of him pitching in the Cape Cod League for the first time this year ahead of the Draft. If he can return to the mound and show off that power stuff, he could still go in the top few rounds.

The latest in the line of pitching Leiters, Cam has a father (Kurt) who reached Double-A and two uncles (Al, Mark) and two cousins (Jack, Mark Jr.) who took the mound in the Majors. After spending his first college season at Central Florida in 2023, he transferred to Florida State and showed first-round stuff early in his sophomore season before developing shoulder issues in March 2024. He underwent cleanup surgery that October and never pitched again for the Seminoles, but the Dodgers still took him in 2025's second round and signed him for $1,346,600.
When he last pitched for the Seminoles, Leiter worked with a 95-96 mph fastball that touched 99 mph and featured carry and armside run at times and heavy sink at others. His 78-82 mph curveball and 85-89 mph slider/cutter both graded as plus pitches with quality depth at their best. He even showed signs of a solid upper-80s changeup/splitter that earned more strikes than either of his breaking balls.
Besides his health, the biggest question with Leiter is whether he can provide enough strikes to remain a starter. More physical than athletic, he operates from an upright delivery that lacks deception and carried a 15 percent walk rate in college. He comes with a lot of risk but also has a huge ceiling and was back throwing in the mid-90s and reaching triple digits during the offseason.

Leiter comes from a pitching family, as his father Kurt reached Double-A and his uncles Al and Mark and cousins Jack and Mark Jr. all made it to the big leagues. Cam started his college career at Central Florida in 2023 and displayed first-round stuff at Florida State the following spring, but he hasn't pitched since March 2024 because of shoulder issues. He had a cleanup surgery that October and still went in the second round this July and signed for $1,346,600 despite his inactivity.
Before he got hurt in 2024, Leiter was operating at 95-96 mph and touching 99 with carry and armside run at times and nasty sink at others. Both his 78-82 mph curveball and 85-89 mph slider/cutter were plus offerings at their best and featured impressive depth. He even flashed a solid upper-80s changeup at times and got more strikes with it than he did with his breaking pitches.
A physical 6-foot-5, 234-pounder with an upright delivery, Leiter has yet to provide consistent strikes. He walked 15 percent of the hitters he faced in college and has trouble landing each of his pitches in the zone, especially his slider. He comes with huge upside but also a lot of questions about his health and control.
