Cannarella didn't draw much scouting attention as a physically underdeveloped South Carolina high school middle infielder, but he made an immediate impact as a center fielder at Clemson. He won Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year honors in 2023 and looked like a potential top-10-overall pick. He hasn't been as dynamic at the plate or on the bases since tearing the labrum in his right (throwing) shoulder early in his sophomore year, an injury that required surgery in July 2024, though he did bat .500 with three homers in seven postseason games to close out this season.

Cannarella possesses some of the best bat-to-ball skills in the Draft, making line-drive contact to all fields from the left side of the plate. He does venture out of the strike zone at times and gets himself out on suboptimal groundball contact more than he should. He has some bat speed but lacks physicality, so there's some question if he'll have more than modest pull power and max out at 12-15 homers per season.

After using his plus speed to steal 24 bases as a freshman, Cannarella went just 6-for-12 swiping bags the last two years while avoiding putting stress on his shoulder by sliding. He's a no-doubt center fielder who covers plenty of ground with his quickness and efficient routes. His arm graded as below average before his injury, and he recorded just four outfield assists in 178 college games.

Cannarella entered 2025 as a potential top-10 pick, having won Atlantic Coast Conference freshman of the year honors in 2023 and increasing his homer output as a sophomore despite dealing with a shoulder injury. However, his offensive game didn't take another step after offseason labrum surgery and he fell to the end of the supplemental first round, where the Marlins signed him for an over-slot $2,227,425 bonus. The Clemson product made a 22-game cameo at High-A to end the year and posted a slash line of .284/.337/.375.

Batting from the left side, Cannarella stands out for his bat-to-ball skills as he stings line drives to all fields. He currently doesn't hit for much power between a lack of physicality and a knack for hitting the ball on the ground, but there's reason to be optimistic that he has more pop in the tank. He has a patient approach and is chasing less than he once did, though further improvements there should enable him to see more balls he can drive. Additionally, the further he is from labrum surgery, the more he'll be able to train properly and add strength.

Cannarella's biggest selling point, however, remains his defense in center field. He's a true burner who runs efficient routes and can make highlight plays. Cannarella has long had a below-average throwing arm which seemed even less efficient after the shoulder surgery. The Marlins will thusly be tasked with helping him regain strength and maximizing his speed on the bases.
