The Phillies scouting department did fine work finding Rincon, who had moved to the Pittsburgh area from Venezuela for high school. The Phillies liked Rincon, who played his high school ball at Shaler Area High and committed to San Jacinto Junior College, and his defensive actions and upside enough to take him in the 14th round of the 2022 Draft, knowing he was eager to begin his pro career. He had a solid first full season in 2023 but has had trouble gaining traction since, missing much of 2024 with hamstring issues, then hitting the injured list again in 2025 with a broken hamate. Both times, he made up for lost at-bats by going to the Arizona Fall League, though he didn’t swing the bat well there.
Thus far, all of Rincon’s value comes from his glove. He’s a no-doubt shortstop for a very long time, with plus actions, hands, footwork and more than enough arm for the premium position. Even though he’s not a burner, his defensive instincts give him plenty of range. He’s only played shortstop thus far, but he could easily slide over to other spots on the dirt if he ends up in a utility role.
While his defense gives him a decent floor, what his ultimate role will be depends entirely on how much, if any, offensive impact he can find. There are some tools to build with for the switch-hitter. He swiped 40 bases thanks to excellent instincts on the basepaths, and he actually doesn’t swing-and-miss or chase all that much, doing damage when he swings. But his strikeout rate jumped to nearly 29 percent in 2025 because he got too passive and didn’t swing enough. If he can find any production in his age 22 season, he could rejuvenate his prospect luster.

After the Venezuelan native headed to the Pittsburgh area for high school, the Phillies took Rincon, previously committed to San Jacinto Junior College, in the 14th round of the 2022 Draft. He jumped on the prospect map in 2023 with a performance that allowed him to reach High-A in his first full season. He wasn’t able to build off of that in 2024 as he missed three months with hamstring injuries, though he did return to action at the end of the regular season and made up for some lost reps by competing in the Arizona Fall League.
While Rincon’s overall numbers as a pro don’t jump off the page (a career .711 OPS heading into 2025), he does bring some solid offensive traits to the table the Phillies are hoping he can get back to with a clean slate. The switch hitter makes a ton of contact with low miss and chase rates, and he draws a lot of walks. The hope is with continued added strength and healthy legs under him, he can provide enough contact and on-base skills to fit regularly into a big league lineup.
What will get him to the big leagues -- and gives him a very high floor -- is his defensive ability at shortstop. He has excellent hands, footwork and plenty of arm for the premium position, and thanks to his instincts, he’ll have more than enough range, especially the further removed from those hamstring issues he gets. He may always be a glove-first guy, but he’s one who could do it as a starter in the future.

Rincon grew up in Venezuela but came to the Pittsburgh area to live with an uncle and play baseball for Shaler High School. He had committed to San Jacinto Junior College had the Draft not worked out, but the Phillies took a low-risk chance in Round 14 and signed him for Day 3 slot ($125,000). While his numbers from his first full season, in which he reached High-A, weren't amazing, he showed off a ton of skills that should continue to translate as he moves up the ladder. He shook off a very slow start this spring back in High-A and was performing better in May when a hamstring injury ended his 2024 season.
Playing at age 20 for all of 2024, Rincon has a very high floor thanks to his defensive ability. His hands, range and footwork are excellent and play up because of his plus instincts. He has more than enough arm for the premium position, and even though he’s not a burner speed-wise, he should be able to play shortstop for a very long time.
There’s optimism that Rincon’s offensive skills will continue to develop as well. He’s a switch-hitter with outstanding contact skills, rarely chasing and limiting strikeouts while drawing a good amount of walks. He’s continued to add strength and there could be more power to come in the future as well. The Phillies feel there could be some Bryson Stott in him in terms of him playing above his tools and becoming an everyday middle infielder in the big leagues.

The Phillies may look back at the 2022 Draft as one where they found some exciting high school talent in all stages of the Draft. It started, of course, with Justin Crawford in the first round and continued with over-slot signing Emaarion Boyd in Round 11. They might have a real sleeper on their hands in Rincon, taken in the 14th round out of Shaler Area High School outside of Pittsburgh. Signed for Day 3 slot, $125,000, Rincon was pushed to full-season ball in 2023 and posted surface numbers that may not jump off the page, but there’s a lot more there to like beneath that surface.
While Rincon might not show up on any Florida State League offensive leaderboards this season, the switch-hitting infielder is doing a lot of things well. It starts with a contact-oriented advanced approach and natural timing in the box. He draws walks and rarely strikes out, with his whiff rate decreasing as the season has gone on. It’s hit-over-power, but he’s added strength since signing and has increased his hard-hit rate and registered some impressive exit velocities. He’s been a better overall hitter from the right side, but has shown he can get to some over-the-fence pop left-handed.
As encouraging as his bat has been, his real calling card is his glove work. Metrics point to him being one of the best defensive shortstops in the Minor Leagues, one with great hands, range footwork and an arm that’s at least above average. There’s an up arrow next to Rincon’s name and if the bat continues to come, he could be a regular at a premium position eventually.
