Scouting Report

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 45 | Run: 50 | Arm: 60 | Field: 60 | Overall: 45

Rincon grew up in Venezuela but came to the Pittsburgh area to live with an uncle and play baseball for Shaler High School. He had committed to San Jacinto Junior College had the Draft not worked out, but the Phillies took a low-risk chance in Round 14 and signed him for Day 3 slot ($125,000). While his numbers from his first full season, in which he reached High-A, weren't amazing, he showed off a ton of skills that should continue to translate as he moves up the ladder. He shook off a very slow start this spring back in High-A and was performing better in May when a hamstring injury ended his 2024 season.

Playing at age 20 for all of 2024, Rincon has a very high floor thanks to his defensive ability. His hands, range and footwork are excellent and play up because of his plus instincts. He has more than enough arm for the premium position, and even though he’s not a burner speed-wise, he should be able to play shortstop for a very long time.

There’s optimism that Rincon’s offensive skills will continue to develop as well. He’s a switch-hitter with outstanding contact skills, rarely chasing and limiting strikeouts while drawing a good amount of walks. He’s continued to add strength and there could be more power to come in the future as well. The Phillies feel there could be some Bryson Stott in him in terms of him playing above his tools and becoming an everyday middle infielder in the big leagues.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 40 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 60 | Overall: 40

The Phillies may look back at the 2022 Draft as one where they found some exciting high school talent in all stages of the Draft. It started, of course, with Justin Crawford in the first round and continued with over-slot signing Emaarion Boyd in Round 11. They might have a real sleeper on their hands in Rincon, taken in the 14th round out of Shaler Area High School outside of Pittsburgh. Signed for Day 3 slot, $125,000, Rincon was pushed to full-season ball in 2023 and posted surface numbers that may not jump off the page, but there’s a lot more there to like beneath that surface.

While Rincon might not show up on any Florida State League offensive leaderboards this season, the switch-hitting infielder is doing a lot of things well. It starts with a contact-oriented advanced approach and natural timing in the box. He draws walks and rarely strikes out, with his whiff rate decreasing as the season has gone on. It’s hit-over-power, but he’s added strength since signing and has increased his hard-hit rate and registered some impressive exit velocities. He’s been a better overall hitter from the right side, but has shown he can get to some over-the-fence pop left-handed.

As encouraging as his bat has been, his real calling card is his glove work. Metrics point to him being one of the best defensive shortstops in the Minor Leagues, one with great hands, range footwork and an arm that’s at least above average. There’s an up arrow next to Rincon’s name and if the bat continues to come, he could be a regular at a premium position eventually.
