The younger brother of Giants right-hander Tristan Beck, Brendan pitched with him at Stanford as a freshman in 2018 before becoming the Cardinal's Opening Day starter in each of the next three seasons. He won Pacific-12 Conference Pitcher of the Year accolades in 2021, when he ranked fourth in NCAA Division I with 143 strikeouts in 108 2/3 innings, then signed for $1.05 million as a second-rounder. He had Tommy John surgery that September, delaying his pro debut until 2023, and missed all of '24 after a follow-up elbow operation. He bounced back to dominate Double-A hitters this year but has struggled following a promotion to Triple-A.
Beck's control and command stand out more than any of his four offerings, the best of which is a solid low-80s slider with impressive depth. His low-90s fastball tops out at 94 mph and doesn't feature much life, meaning it grades as a fringy offering, as does his upper-70s downer curveball. His low-80s changeup has some sink but isn't very effective.
Beck is a good athlete who repeats his delivery while working quickly and moving his pitches around the strike zone. He might be the best strike-thrower in the system, which helps him compensate for his so-so stuff. As an amateur, he reminded some area scouts of Shane Bieber at the same stage of their careers, though his ceiling now is more of a back-of-the-rotation starter or middle reliever.

Beck pitched with his older brother, Tristan (now in the Giants system), at Stanford as a freshman in 2018 before becoming the Cardinals' Opening Day starter the next three seasons. He won Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Year honors in 2021, when he ranked fourth in NCAA Division I with 143 strikeouts in 108 2/3 innings. New York expected him to move quickly after signing him for $1.05 million in the second round, but he required Tommy John surgery that September and he won't make his pro debut until 2023 at age 24.
Beck's ability to command and mix four pitches stands out more than any of his individual offerings. He added some velocity during his final season at Stanford, working in the low 90s and reaching 96 mph, and the Yankees believe he may find some more in the tank by making some mechanical changes once he returns. He throws a low-80s slider, an upper-70s downer curveball and a low-80s changeup with fade and sink, and each gets mentioned by evaluators as his best weapon.
With his work ethic and advanced feel for pitching, Beck should be able to bounce back from his elbow reconstruction. A good athlete, he repeats his delivery well while working fast and moving his offerings around the strike zone. He reminded some area scouts of Shane Bieber at the same stages of their careers and still is a high-probability starter despite his late pro debut.

Beck teamed with his older brother Tristan (now in the Giants system) at Stanford as a freshman in 2018 before serving as the Cardinal's Opening Day starter in the next three seasons. The 2021 Pacific-12 Conference pitcher of the year, he ranked fourth in NCAA Division I with 143 strikeouts in 108 2/3 innings and helped Stanford reach the College World Series for the first time in 13 years. The Yankees signed him for $1.05 million in the second round and envisioned him advancing quickly, but he had Tommy John surgery last September that will delay his pro debut until 2023.
Beck has command of four pitches, the best of which is up for debate. He gained some velocity last spring, sitting in the low-90s with his fastball and touching 96 mph during the CWS, and New York believes he can find some more with some mechanical changes once he comes back. He throws a low-80s slider, upper-70s downer curveball and low-80s changeup with fade and sink, and there are evaluators who will vouch for each as his most effective offering.
His polish and work ethic should help Beck rebound from his elbow reconstruction. He's a good athlete who repeats his delivery well while working fast and mixing pitches and locations. He reminded area scouts somewhat of Shane Bieber at the same stage of their careers and still comes with a high floor despite his setback.

Beck pitched with his older brother Tristan at Stanford as a freshman in 2018 before becoming the Cardinal's Opening Day starter the last three seasons. After Tristan went to the Braves in the fourth round three years ago, Beck surpassed him by going to the Yankees in the second round this June. The Pacific-12 Conference pitcher of the year after ranking fourth in NCAA Division I with 143 strikeouts in 108 2/3 innings, he signed for $1.05 million.
Beck lacks a true plus pitch but he commands four offerings well. His fastball gained a couple of ticks of velocity in 2021, sitting in the low 90s and topping out at 96 mph during the College World Series, and New York believes he can tap into some more power with some mechanical changes. Scouts debate which of his secondary pitches is his best, with his low-80s slider, upper-70s downer curveball and low-80s changeup with fade and sink all receiving votes.
A good athlete, Beck uses a simple delivery and repeats it with ease. He works fast, mixes pitches and locations, pounds the strike zone and has good mound presence. He comes with a high floor as a good bet to become a No. 4 starter and reminded area scouts a bit of Shane Bieber at the same stage of their careers.

Tristan Beck was a Stanford product who was a fourth-round pick of the Braves in 2018 and is currently a San Francisco Giants prospect. Now it’s his younger brother’s turn, as Brendan started his Cardinal career as a two-way player before focusing on pitching only in 2019. Eligible for the Draft last year, he didn’t go in the top five rounds, enabling him to return and serve as Stanford’s Friday night starter in 2021.
A 6-foot-2 right-hander, Beck is more about his feel for pitching than an eye-popping repertoire, though his stuff was ticking upwards a bit in 2021. His fastball is now more of an average offering, sitting comfortably at 91 mph, and he’s shown the ability to reach back and get 93 mph when he needs it. The rest of his stuff, a distinct curve and slider, as well as a changeup, all grade out as average offerings.
Beck’s ability to mix all four of his pitches and throw them all for strikes allows all of his stuff to play up. He’s fun to watch because he works fast and his combination of strike-throwing and athleticism remind some a little bit of Shane Bieber when he came out of college in 2016. Bieber was a fourth-round pick and seeing Beck go at some point on Day 2 as well seems extremely plausible.
