Compton entered his redshirt sophomore season at Arizona State as a potential 2025 first-round pick after earning Pac-12 Conference freshman of the year honors, although his production regressed. His stock ticked back up after a record-setting Draft Combine performance with the three hardest exit velocities in the event's five-year history, and the Marlins signed him for an under-slot $2 million as a second-round pick. He got an aggressive assignment to High-A and posted a 112 wRC+ in 27 games while showing off his signature power.
The lefty slugger is a stocky 6-foot-1 with incredible raw strength out of a crouched stance. Compton was able to access that power more in his first college season when he controlled the zone better, and the Marlins will work closely on his swing decisions. There is plenty of risk in his hit tool, though, especially considering he was just 2-for-21 with nine strikeouts against 95+ mph velocity and was quite vulnerable to sliders last year in college.
Compton is a decent runner, and the Marlins have pushed him to be more aggressive on the basepaths. His range in the outfield is lacking, though, and combined with a fringy arm which required Tommy John surgery his first year at Arizona State leaves him limited to left field. He's likely to get time at first base in 2026 to increase his versatility, but that lack of defensive value puts lots of pressure on him to unlock his natural power.

A two-way player as an Arizona high schooler, Compton required Tommy John surgery after his senior season and concentrated on hitting after redshirting in his first year at Arizona State. He earned Pacific-12 Conference Freshman of the Year and Cape Cod League All-Star accolades when he returned in 2024, though his performance dipped this spring. He still hit the ball consistently harder than most players in the college class, and the Marlins signed him for $2 million in the second round.
Compton put on a show at the Draft Combine, recording the three highest exit velocities in the five-year history of the event, topping out at 116.9 mph. He transforms his considerable strength into well-above-average raw power that plays to all fields, though he doesn't always let it come naturally. His left-handed swing can get too uphill at times, and he got beat up by fastballs too often as a redshirt sophomore.
Compton's stocky build and overall game draw comparisons to former Sun Devils outfielder Kole Calhoun. He's presently an average runner but may slow down a bit as he gets older. He has fringy arm strength and range to match in left field, his only viable position besides first base.

Compton was a two-way player in the Arizona high school ranks, but stopped his work as a left-handed pitcher when he needed Tommy John surgery after his prep career. He redshirted his first year at Arizona State, but returned as a hitter-only in 2024 following a strong showing with the bat in the Northwoods League the previous summer. He was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and earned freshman all-American honors from Baseball America (first team) and D1 Baseball (second team), then raised his profile even more with a .903 OPS in the Cape Cod League last summer.
Strong and thick, Compton can really impact the baseball from the left side of the plate, reminding some of former Sun Devils standout Kole Calhoun. In his first season with ASU, he showed the ability to drive the ball to all fields, with most of his over-the-fence pop showing up more to his pull side. His swing-and-miss and tendency to chase, especially against softer stuff, was a bit of a concern. He tightened that up on the Cape, cutting his strikeout rate and drawing more walks, making him a much more dangerous hitter overall.
Compton is going to have to hit because his other tools grade out as fringe average. He’s not a runner and while he’s an acceptable defender in the outfield, he’s likely limited to left field because he doesn’t have the kind of arm most teams like to see from their right fielder. If his offensive game continues on an upward trajectory, he still is the kind of college performer who’ll go in the early rounds.
