After Smith's combination of stuff, athleticism and arm speed landed him in the third round of the 2023 Draft, the Tennessee high school product had Tommy John surgery shortly after turning pro. He missed all of 2024 and worked just 21 innings in his pro debut last year, but he's finally making regular starts this season. While he'll need time to develop and to add some strength to his projectable 6-foot-2 frame, he has some of the best upside among Los Angeles' starting pitching prospects.
Smith has advanced feel for a mid-80s changeup that fades and sinks, and he shows the ability to land it for strikes or use it as a chase pitch. His fastball sits at 93-96 mph and touches 98 with quality carry and should join his cambio as a plus offering once he learns to command it better. His upper-80s slider, low-90s cutter and upper-70s curveball are all works in progress but show some promise.
Smith explodes off the mound and tunnels his pitches well from a three-quarters arm slot. He still has to prove that he can maintain and harness his stuff, and the Dodgers think his athleticism will help him do so. They'll try to bring him along carefully while also realizing that he'll need to be protected from the Rule 5 Draft following the 2027 season.

Smith surpassed Trey Cabbage (Twins, fourth round, 2015) as the highest pick ever out of Grainger HS (Rutledge, Tenn.) when the Dodgers selected him in the third round in July. He gave up a Virginia Tech scholarship to sign for $703,000. Though he's not very physical, his quick arm produces quality stuff and strikes.
Despite getting a late start on the diamond because he played basketball over the winter, Smith came out firing at 90-93 mph and reaching 95 with arm-side run on his fastball during ths spring. He should gain more velocity once he adds some strength to his skinny 6-foot-2 frame. He produces high spin rates on two distinct breaking pitches, an upper-70s curveball that grades as plus and a low-80s slider with more lateral break.
Smith also has feel for a low-80s changeup with fade and depth that he didn't need much against prep competition. While he lacks size, he compensates with athleticism and arm speed. He has a clean delivery and no trouble filling the strike zone.

Grainger HS (Rutledge, Tenn.) produced Twins fourth-round pick Trey Cabbage in the 2015 Draft, and Smith could go in a similar range this July. He's not very physical but his quick arm produces quality stuff and strikes. If he doesn't turn pro this summer, he'll attend Virginia Tech.
