Rodriguez signed with the Padres for $370,000 out of Venezuela in January 2021 but didn’t pitch for a stateside affiliate until 2024, due in part to right elbow issues. His big breakout came that year, however, when he climbed from Single-A to Double-A in 2024, striking out 75 batters in 61 1/3 innings of relief along the way. Rodriguez jumped from San Antonio to San Diego for his MLB debut on May 31, 2025, was sent back to Triple-A El Paso and returned to the Majors in September. He was on the Padres’ postseason roster but didn’t make a playoff appearance.

It's all power stuff all the time from the 6-foot-1 right-hander. Rodriguez can touch triple-digits with both his four-seamer and sinker and typically sits 96-99 mph. (He had a little extra juice during his time in the Majors, as is typical of debutants.) He went to the four-seamer more generally in the bigs, especially against lefties, and reserved the sinker for his work against righties. There isn’t standout movement with either pitch, but the heat can make both effective. Rodriguez’s upper-80s changeup is the real star of the show. It gets almost perfectly 10 mph separation off the fastballs with lots of armside run (16 inches on average in MLB), and batters across all levels have come up empty against it.

Rodriguez works in an upper-80s cut-slider against righties for something with gloveside movement. As you’d expect for someone who lets it fly, Rodriguez’s arsenal comes with a good amount of effort in his delivery, leading to more walks than strikeouts in his brief Triple-A time. That K/BB ratio reversed course again in the Majors, and the only question now is if he can find enough command to be usable in high-leverage situations.

A $370,000 signee out of Venezuela in January 2021, Rodriguez didn’t come flying out of the gate in the Dominican Summer League that year and didn’t pitch for an affiliate at all in 2022 and 2023, partly due to right elbow issues. He made 21 appearances in the winter league back home ahead of ’24, and that helped set the 6-foot-1 right-hander set off on a massive breakout campaign. Pitching exclusively in relief, Rodriguez posted a 2.64 ERA and .180 average-against with 75 strikeouts in 61 1/3 innings across three levels, topping out at Double-A San Antonio.

Pitch for pitch, Rodriguez may have the most dynamic stuff in the entire San Diego system. Pitching in shorter stints, he touched 101 mph in 2024 and sat 96-99 with his fastball, and low-level batters just couldn’t handle that level of heat, particularly when he ran it up the ladder to the top of the zone. His changeup was arguably even better -- an 86-89 mph offering with the right amount of separation and tunneling leading to a 58.2 percent whiff rate in ’24. His hard upper-80s slider was an option saved for righties and flashes above average.

It's certainly an effortful delivery from the righty to get to those upper-level velocities, and it didn’t come as a shock that his control wavered as he climbed the ladder in 2024. There is a certain temptation to see how he would look as a starter, considering Rodriguez will still only be 21 for the entire ’25 campaign, but the stuff plays so well in relief now, it might be best to let him be. He’s already a quick climber in the traditional Padres prospect mold and could impact the San Diego bullpen soon.

Rodriguez signed with the Padres for $370,000 out of Venezuela in 2021, and he opened with a subpar performance in the Dominican Summer League that year, posting a 6.20 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings while working as both a starter and reliever. He didn’t pitch for an affiliate in 2022 or '23, in part due to right elbow issues in the former season, but he did make up for some of the lost time with 21 appearances (20 innings) in the Venezuelan Winter League this past offseason. After a standout spring in which he cracked San Diego’s Spring Breakout roster, Rodriguez opened as a reliever with Single-A Lake Elsinore, fanned nine of his 19 batters faced there and was promoted to High-A Fort Wayne in late April.

Throwing in shorter stints, the 6-foot-1 right-hander will touch triple-digits with his fastball and typically lives in the 97-99 mph range. Single-A hitters couldn’t handle that level of heat, allowing for the 20-year-old’s quick movement up the San Diego chain. His upper-80s changeup shows tremendous separation off that fastball, and he can pull the string on the pitch, giving him another potential plus offering. His upper-80s slider is of the harder variety and flashes above-average, though it doesn’t quite show up as much as the other two pitches.

Rodriguez only walked one batter in his four appearances with Lake Elsinore, but he’s shown more concerning control problems in the VWL and the early days with Fort Wayne. That isn’t a shock with a hard thrower who is clearly still growing more comfortable with his elite velocity. Now that he’s bullpen-only, Rodriguez could be one of the Padres’ patented quick movers -- in some ways he already is -- if he can stick to the zone more regularly.
