Nett participated in both the 2021 Appalachian and 2022 MLB Draft Leagues, and after showing a raw but promising arsenal in the latter, the St. Charles (Mo.) CC product signed with the Padres for $10,000 in August 2022. Shoulder issues limited his first full season to 40 1/3 innings between the Arizona Complex League and Single-A Lake Elsinore, but he confirmed his spot on the radar with 21 strikeouts in 17 1/3 frames in the Arizona Fall League. Nett, who dealt with elbow tightness in the summer, expanded his workload slightly to 65 innings in '24 and made 19 of his 20 appearances with High-A Fort Wayne before a cup of Double-A coffee. He made up for the lost innings with a stellar turn (1.02 ERA, 23 strikeouts in five starts) in the Puerto Rican Winter League. He had already surpassed his career high in innings pitched in his first full season in the Texas League when he was part of the four-prospect package sent to the A’s in return for Mason Miller and JP Sears at the Trade Deadline.

While working around the injuries, Nett has continued to show stellar velocity, touching as high as 99 mph in the Minor Leagues last season. He typically sits 95-97 mph and gets swing-and-miss up in the zone thanks to ample carry. He also throws a tight 81-84 mph slider that ran a 38 percent whiff rate in ’24 and a sharper 90-92 mph cutter that can catch hitters off guard. He’ll mix in an upper-70s curveball with more vertical drop and he’s scrapped a low-80s splitter in favor of a much more effective 88 mph kick-change that really neutralizes lefties.

Nett has some effort in his delivery, and the 2025 season (pre-trade) was the first time he’d posted a walk rate below 13 percent at any Minor League stop. Combine that with the early injury concerns, and it’s easy to think he could be a reliever eventually. But his arsenal is deep enough, and his stuff is promising enough -- when combined with strides taken this season -- to keep landing him in a starting role in the upper Minors.

Nett is a testament to the possible stories collegiate summer leagues can provide. The St. Charles (Missouri) CC product pitched in the Appalachian and MLB Draft Leagues in 2021 and '22 respectively, and it was his raw showing in the latter that got the Padres interested. San Diego signed the right-hander in August 2022, only for his first full season to be slowed by shoulder issues. He eventually cracked Single-A Lake Elsinore in late August and made up for the lost time in the Arizona Fall League, where he posted a 4.67 ERA with 21 strikeouts and 10 walks in 17 1/3 innings. 

The 6-foot-3 hurler affirmed his standing as an interesting arm during that time in the desert, starting with his mid-90s fastball that showed ample carry. It added a few ticks from his time in the Draft League and looked explosive at times up in the zone. He plays off that with a high-spin slider with sharp action and a cutter. His low-90s changeup isn’t much of a weapon as of yet with little separation off the heater, and he wasn’t as effective against lefties in the AFL as a result. 

Nett’s control was certainly improved in the fall, but there’s still a good amount of effort in his delivery, pointing to long-term concerns. He has the stuff to be an eventual two-pitch Major League reliever, which would be a major developmental win for himself and the Padres considering his amateur background.
