Of course, Bateman was going to make for a close follow everywhere he went as an amateur. For starters, he’s 6-foot-8. Secondly, he’s a left-handed pitcher. But he proved to have more than just those two attributes with quality appearances in the PDP League and Area Code Games heading into his senior year at Adolfo Camarillo (Calif.) High School -- the alma mater of 2003 No. 1 pick Delmon Young. Bateman joined the Padres as a second-round pick and signed for $2.5 million, roughly the slot of a selection 15 picks higher. He was more than holding his own during his full-season debut in the Single-A California League when he was sent as part of the huge package of prospects to the Orioles in return for Ryan O’Hearn and Ramon Laureano at the Trade Deadline.
Scouts dreamed on Bateman’s size and praised his makeup as part of the evaluation process, but the stuff was plenty good too, and it’s shown up so far as a pro. He touched 97 mph with his fastball and generally sat 91-93 during summer showcases and has again been up to 97 mph during his debut season. He throws from a high three-quarter slot and has both a slider and more of a 1-to-7 curve, though he doesn’t really throw the latter breaking ball. He continues to work on developing his changeup, a pitch he didn’t need much in high school.
Bateman improved his strike-throwing heading into the Draft, and while his history with walks isn’t perfect, his trendlines should get him to average control with advanced instruction, and he did a solid job of finding the zone in 2025. He’ll only be 19 for the duration of the 2025 Minor League season, and the upside is significant, especially if he carries his impressive work ethic into the pros. There’s always the fallback of being a big, dominant lefty out of the bullpen with that heater and breaking ball.

Left-handed pitching is always hard to find. Southpaws who are 6-foot-8, like Bateman, are bound to garner a lot of attention. The big lefty certainly found his way onto follow lists over the summer, showing glimpses of premium stuff at events like MLB’s PDP League and the Area Code Games, giving him the chance to be the first player from Adolfo Camarillo High School in California to go in the first few rounds since Delmon Young was the No. 1 overall pick back in 2003. He eventually landed to the Padres in the second round and signed for above slot at $2.5 million.
Bateman’s size and his makeup were separators as the spring unfolded, though his current two-pitch mix is nothing to sneeze at. He’s shown he can touch 97 mph with his fastball and was sitting around 92 over the course of his summer showcase tour. He has a pretty true 1-to-7 type of curve, with big spin and depth at the plate. It's already a plus pitch.
The development of a third pitch is a key area of growth for Bateman. Finding a changeup that works will continue to be something he’ll have to focus on at the next level and could make him one of the best high schoolers to come out of this class. He showed improved strike-throwing over the summer, and while his walk rate concerned some, he’s largely been around the zone, and there’s belief he’ll keep trending in the right direction as he learns to get his large frame in sync consistently. The former LSU recruit gets high marks for his work ethic, adding confidence that he can do what’s needed to excel at the next level.
