Scouting Report

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 45 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

The Southern California native headed to Capistrano Valley High School to play in a more competitive environment after a standout 2022 summer and boosted his stock enough to sign for $700,000 as a 2023 eighth-rounder, essentially getting third-round money to go pro instead of head to UCLA. He was a solid performer in his first full season and finished second in the Florida State League in average (.288) and on-base percentage (.368) while placing fourth in OPS (.767) over 84 games. Baro rounded out the year with 11 contests with High-A Brooklyn.

Standing in the box at 6-foot-even, Baro runs a loose and easy operation as a left-handed hitter, starting with a slightly open stance while looking to jump on balls. He didn’t expand the zone often in the FSL and found the barrel well on pitches inside the zone, helping the belief he’ll be at least an average hitter. Baro didn’t stand out for his pop, however, topping out with a 104.4 mph exit velocity with St. Lucie, but there’s still a good amount of projectability in his frame. He could shoot balls harder if he’s a late bloomer as some scouts expect.

Baro is expected to be an average runner by the time he reaches the Majors, and he’s shown good defensive actions as an infielder. The Mets were loaded on the dirt in the lower levels, causing him to move around with stops at shortstop, third base and second. He’d be even more valuable up the middle, though he has the arm strength for the hot corner, and New York officials plan to give him plenty of looks at the four and six, especially as he proves himself with the stick.

Hailing from a family of Boston-area sports fans, Baro headed to Southern California’s Capistrano Valley High School after a standout 2022 summer, and he continued to help his stock in a more competitive environment. He was committed to UCLA and looked like he was headed there before the Mets selected him in the eighth round in July and signed him well above slot at $700,000 – money typically associated with the late third round. Baro played seven games in the Florida Complex League after signing and went 6-for-19 (.316) with five walks and only one strikeout.

Baro shows a loose and easy left-handed swing from his athletic 6-foot-2 frame, and Mets officials noted how much more physically developed he looked this winter after participating in the Get Wright position-player camp. His offense is aided by his excellent approach, and while the power only plays to the gaps now, he might still make enough contact to be a solid overall hitter at peak.

The Golden State native is right on the cusp of being an above-average runner and could get faster if and when he adds strength as he enters his 20s. He has good actions on the dirt and showcases decent arm strength – attributes that would normally get him long looks at shortstop. However, the Mets are particularly loaded at the six at the lower levels, and Baro already has experience at second and third base. His best fit might be at second, where he can remain up the middle.

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 40 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 45 | Overall: 40

Though he’s grown up in southern California, Baro received his first name because his family were all Boston-area sports fans. The infielder has made a name for himself, first over the summer and then with a move to more competitive Capistrano Valley High School as one of the better prep shortstops in the area.

At 6-foot-2, Baro has a narrow and athletic frame with a loose, easy left-handed swing that reminds some of former SoCal prep standout Brice Turang. He has an excellent approach at the plate, sees the ball well and doesn’t swing and miss much. He may never be a huge power guy, but if he can add strength to that frame, there should be more impact -- the one part of his offensive game in question -- in the future.

Baro will record average to above-average run times now, but that added strength should help him be faster as he matures. He should also improve his arm strength over time and that, along with his easy actions defensively, gives him a very nice shortstop starter kit. Initially committed to go to New Mexico, Baro switched gears due to a coaching change and now teams will have a commitment to UCLA to contend with.
