Abeldt was one of college baseball's best relievers in his first two years at Texas Christian, recording a 2.81 ERA with 125 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings and spending both summers with the U.S. collegiate national team. The Horned Frogs planned on turning him into a starter in 2025, but he blew out his elbow just before the beginning of the season and required Tommy John surgery in February. He still could draw interest in the first five rounds of the Draft.
Abeldt relies heavily on a 91-94 mph fastball that peaks at 96 and is much more effective than its ordinary velocity would indicate. His heater has riding action and plenty of deception coming out of a crossfire delivery, and it's nearly impossible to lift when he works down in the zone. He can't overpower hitters with a slider that sits around 80 mph, but it can baffle them with its sweeping action when it's on.
While he doesn't use it much, Abeldt has the makings of an effective low-80s changeup with sink. He looks like a shorter, stronger version of Chris Sale with his slingy delivery, and it generates a lot of empty swings and groundballs. It remains to be seen if he can succeed as a starter, but he comes with a high floor as a quality lefty reliever once he returns to full health.
