Signed at the start of the 2022 international signing period out of Venezuela for $450,000, Escobar got off to a relatively slow start to his pro career, spending two rather non-descript seasons in the Dominican Summer League, finishing with a combined .694 OPS there. Things clicked more when he came stateside in 2024, when he posted a .338/.495/.481 line in 24 games in the Florida Complex League, though shin splints limited his time on the field.
When he was healthy, Escobar’s surface numbers (and the underlying data behind them) last year point to a potential breakout. Even when he wasn’t putting up numbers in the DSL, he was showing an advanced approach at the plate, with a lot of walks to go along with minimal swing-and-miss or chase. But while he was making a lot of contact, he wasn’t finding the barrel. He learned last year how to get his body behind the ball from the right side of the plate, allowing him to impact the ball a lot more consistently and start tapping into his raw power.
Small, stocky and strong, Escobar is far from a burner, but he’s shown a knack for stealing bases. Defensively, he’s gotten most of his reps at second base, and he’ll continue to play there, but he also will keep getting time at third, with some in the organization thinking that could be his long-term home, with the arm and potentially the power to profile there.

The headliner for the Phillies’ 2022 international signing class might have been William Bergolla, who got just over $2 million to sign when the period opened in January of that year. But it looks like they may have another talented infielder in Escobar, who signed out of Venezuela for $450,000 right when the period opened. He spent two summers in the Dominican Summer League with so-so results, but his first trip stateside has gone much better, as he’s emerged as one of the better hitters in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League in 2024.
Compact and strong, Escobar is a right-handed hitter with the chance to do some damage. He sees the ball very well and doesn’t chase often. He’s drawn more walks than strikeouts in his brief career, which should help him tap into his at least above-average raw power consistently as he progresses. He’s a fringy runner, but he has shown a willingness to steal a base when the opportunity arises.
During his pro debut, Escobar saw time at three infield positions, but hasn’t played shortstop since. He’s best suited at second (where he’s seen most of his time) or at third -- which he has the arm, and potentially the power, to profile there, giving off a bit of an Alex Bregman vibe when it all clicks. A big test in 2025 with full-season ball will help show if his gains during his United States debut are for real.
