Bastardo had grown into one of the Red Sox highest-upside pitching prospects since they signed him out of Venezuela for $35,000, but underwent Tommy John surgery in July 2024. The Blue Jays, chasing his long-term upside, selected him in December’s Rule 5 Draft. Bastardo sported a 5.36 ERA through 10 starts at Double-A before going under the knife, but now that he’s with the Blue Jays, he’ll have most of the 2025 season to round out his rehab process.
When healthy, Bastardo has a very advanced changeup for his age, potentially his best offering. That was one of the Blue Jays’ main attractions to Bastardo, on top of a heater that sat 93-95 mph while touching 97. His breaking balls are closer to average, but there’s clearly a starter’s arsenal in there, and if that doesn’t work down the road, the Blue Jays could try to max out his arm talent as a reliever. The rehab will slow any process, of course, but Bastardo got up to 119 1/3 innings in 2023.
This is a fascinating piece of roster management by the Blue Jays, who tend to get creative the odd time they dip into the Rule 5 Draft. If they can find a way to keep Bastardo long term, it’ll be a major win for the organization as it looks to add high-upside pitching talent any way possible.

The biggest bargain in Boston's 2018-19 international class, Bastardo signed for $35,000 out of Venezuela. He didn't reach full-season ball until 2022 but has been one of the better Red Sox pitching performers in the lower Minors the past two years. He had one of the best outings in their system last year, striking out 14 in a seven-inning shutout in High-A in late July, but tired down the stretch. He made 10 starts for Double-A Portland in 2024 before needing Tommy John surgery. When the Red Sox left Bastardo off the 40-man in the offseason, the Blue Jays selected him in the Rule 5 Draft as an upside pick.
Bastardo's best offering is a mid-80s changeup with fade and sink that helped him limit left-handers to a .190 average last season. He sets it up with a 93-95 mph fastball that reaches 97, though it doesn't feature good shape and gets pounded when he doesn't locate it well. He sports a pair of average breaking balls, with his low-80s curveball perhaps slightly better than his tight mid-80s slider.
If Bastardo can develop more consistency with his arsenal and his ability to command it, he could be a back-of-the-rotation starter. He’ll spend much of his Rule 5 year rehabbing, allowing Toronto to keep closer eyes on him without the Major League pressure out of the gate. But he’ll still have to prove his stuff has returned post-TJ to give himself a true MLB shot in his new organization.

Most of the best prospects from the Red Sox's 2018-19 international class didn't land huge bonuses, including Bastardo. Since signing for $35,000 out of Venezuela, he has steadily climbed through the lower levels of the system and held his own against older competition.
Bastardo's fastball could be a plus pitch if he learns to command it better. It sits at 93-95 mph and touches 97, dodging barrels with arm-side run as well as some sink. His mid-80s changeup has similar movement and is his best secondary offering, slightly ahead of his mid-80s curveball and upper-80s slider.
Bastardo has the raw ingredients to be a starter but needs more consistency, both in the quality of his offerings and his ability to locate them. Doing a better job of repeating his delivery would help him throw more strikes and enhance his chances of remaining a starter. Adding more strength to his 6-foot-1 frame would do the same.
