Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 40 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

It’s taken a little while for Perez to gain traction in the Rockies system. After signing for $300,000 in January 2021, he spent two summers in the Dominican Summer League, then spent the bulk of the next two seasons with Single-A Fresno. His 2025 season was mostly played with High-A Spokane, and he’s handled a move to Double-A in 2026 very well, showing that his contact skills might work at the upper levels.

Ever since signing, Perez has shown a penchant for putting the ball in play from the left side of the plate. He very rarely swings and misses, but he can be a victim of his own success as his chase rates remain very high. He has added strength to his 6-foot-3 frame, which helped him get to some more extra-base authority, but the power some projected hasn’t shown up consistently, even with his success this year with Hartford.

Perez can steal a base even though he possesses just average speed, and he moves very well defensively, especially given his size. He might have the range, instincts and arm to stick at shortstop long-term, though he’s also seen some time at second and third should he need to fill a utility-type role in the future. He’s still only 22, so there’s time for him to refine his swing decisions, get to more impact and grow into a regular role in one spot in the future.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 40 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

Signed for $300,000 in January 2021, Perez toiled away in relative anonymity for two summers in the Dominican Summer League. He opened some eyes in his first Spring Training stateside in 2023 and held his own with a jump to full-season Fresno, albeit without much offensive impact. The Rockies sent him back to Single-A to start the 2024 season and some of that impact started showing up, which earned him a late nudge up to High-A Spokane, where he played shortstop for a championship-winning team.

Perez is a left-handed hitter who is gradually and continually adding strength. He’s considerably bigger than his listed height and weight, with team officials thinking he’s closer to 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds now. The left-handed hitter has a strong offensive foundation built on making a ton of contact, and despite chasing too much, he rarely strikes out. There’s confidence the combination of that added strength and a little more refinement in his approach will lead to a greater power output after he took a big step forward by hitting 10 homers in 2024.

An average runner, Perez can steal a base. And even at his size, he moves very well on the dirt defensively. There is conviction internally that he can stay at short for the long term, but if the impact at the plate keeps coming, he could profile well even if he has to move to a corner.
