Pintar went from walk-on at Brigham Young to Diamondbacks 2022 fifth-round pick in three years, though he missed much of his Draft year with a shoulder injury that required surgery. He played in just 51 games during his first full pro season because of a broken ankle before coming back and tearing up High-A to begin this year. He scuffled in his first month in Double-A before Arizona traded him and corner infield prospect Deyvison De Los Santos to the Marlins for A.J. Puk.

Pintar bats from an upright right-handed stance with minimal lower-half load, but he has made the most of his raw power in 2024. He's doing a better job of turning on and lifting pitches, and could produce 15-plus homers per season. He controls the strike zone well and his on-base ability stands out more than his pop.

Pintar has plus speed and has been more aggressive on the bases this year than he has been as a pro. The Diamondbacks shifted him from his college position of second base to center field, where his quickness helps him close on balls in the gaps. He's still working to refine his reads and routes, and his shoulder woes have left him with below-average arm strength.

Pintar went from a BYU walk-on in 2020 to one of the program’s best performers a year later after he slashed .333/.433/.556 with nine homers and more walks (32) than strikeouts (29) in 48 games. He hit just .209 with a .613 OPS in 17 games to begin his junior year and then underwent shoulder surgery that shut him down the rest of the way. Relying mostly on what they saw in 2021, the D-backs took Pintar in the fifth round and signed him for below slot at $316,950.

The former Cougar was back to hitting and taking ground balls as part of his rehab process heading into the spring, adding to Arizona’s optimism. How much the shoulder affected his 2022 performance remains in question, but the raw tools are certainly enticing enough. He’s a plus runner running down the line and has some promising raw power from the right side. Pintar drew praise from BYU coaches for his improving approach in college, starting with laying off breaking stuff below the zone, and if that upward trajectory continues, it should help ease his transition to the Minors.

A shortstop in 2021, Pintar moved to second base-only last year out of concern for his below-average throwing arm. The D-backs say they expect to continue to move him around the infield, hoping to take advantage of his athleticism and range, but second still seems most likely in the long run. If the shoulder was nothing but bad timing and Pintar can get his performance to match his tools again, he could be a mid-round steal for Arizona.

Just when he was about to build on that in 2022, Pintar suffered a shoulder injury that later needed surgery and shut down his season after 17 games, in which he hit just .209/.329/.284. The D-backs still felt comfortable in his previous production to take the 21-year-old in the fifth round and sign him for below slot at $316,950.

How much the shoulder affected Pintar’s play in the spring remains to be seen, as he’s yet to debut in pro ball, but what makes him exciting are the raw tools he can showcase when healthy. His speed is at least plus moving down the baseline, and even in the difficult 2022, he still showed above-average raw power. During his best season on campus, BYU coaches noted the improvements in his approach, like laying off breaking pitches in the dirt. That will be tested against even better secondaries in the Minor League ranks, and after the time off, it’ll be interesting to follow how that locks in upon his return.

Pintar played both short and second in school but moved to the keystone exclusively last spring because of how the shoulder issues limited him to a below-average arm. After the Draft, the D-backs noted that they liked his ability to use his athleticism at both middle-infield spots, but until he proves he can make the throws from the six again, he still projects best at second. If this was just a case of a badly timed shoulder injury affecting performance, then Pintar could prove to be a toolsy and valuable fifth-round selection.
