Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 55 | Overall: 50

Tredwell was an exciting junior at Mater Dei High School in California in 2020 when he needed Tommy John surgery in January, forcing him out of action for that season and the summer showcase circuit. He went on to UCLA and took over the closer’s role for the Bruins as a freshman in '22, finishing with a 2.11 ERA and .195 batting average against. A move into UCLA’s weekend rotation was slowed a bit this spring with a back issue, though his combination of size and feel for pitching were still on display.

Though he’s 6-foot-8, Tredwell’s strike-throwing ability really stands out, as the freshman All-American walked just 1.1 per nine in 2022. He has plenty of stuff to fill up the zone with. While his fastball averaged around 91 mph last year, he was 92-94 for much of the fall, touching as high as 96; and it looked like those velocity gains were real when he was 100 percent this spring. He backs his heater up with an 80-mph slider that misses a ton of bats and could be a plus pitch in time, a slower average curve and a changeup that’s an above-average offering as well.

Tredwell is a good athlete on the mound, which helps him repeat his smooth delivery well and fill up the zone with all four pitches. There could be more in the tank here and teams that like taking strike-throwing pitchers and work with them to improve velocity should have interest in the first couple of rounds.

2025

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 55 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 40 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

Signed for an over-slot $1,497,500 as a 2023 second-rounder, Tredwell offers an interesting combination of size and stuff but also has a lengthy injury history. He missed his junior and senior high school seasons following Tommy John surgery in 2020, then lost much of his Draft year at UCLA with a back ailment and the last two months of his 2024 pro debut to a shoulder strain. Finally healthy this year, he has worked his way from Single-A to Double-A.

Though Tredwell's fastball sits at a pedestrian 91-93 mph and peaks at 95, it misses bats because his 6-foot-8 frame, high arm slot and carry create deception. Both his upper-70s curveball and low-80s slider feature good depth, play well off his heater and can be solid pitches at their best. He doesn't show much faith in his mid-80s changeup with fade.

Tredwell's size creates natural extension that allows his pitches to get on hitters more quickly than expected. Though he does a good job of keeping his long limbs in sync, his control has regressed from solid in college to fringy in pro ball. If he can stay healthy and improve the location of his pitches, he could be a No. 4 starter.

2024

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 55 | Overall: 40

Tredwell has barely pitched the past four years, missing his junior and senior high school seasons following Tommy John surgery in 2020, working 47 innings as a UCLA freshman reliever in 2022 and just 45 1/3 as a starter last spring before a back injury sidelined him. The Astros still liked his combination of size, stuff and pitchability to select the sophomore-eligible in the second round last July and sign him for an over-slot $1,497,500. He posted an 8.10 ERA in the first two months of his pro debut this spring, then got on a roll before getting shut down with a shoulder strain in mid-July.

Tredwell's fastball parks at 91-93 mph and tops out at 95 yet plays as a solid offering because his 6-foot-8 frame, high arm slot and flat approach angle create a lot of deception. Both of his breaking balls feature good depth and can miss bats, with his low-80s slider eliciting more chases out of the zone than his upper-70s curveball. He hasn't used his fading mid-80s changeup much, so it's not as effective as the rest of his arsenal.

His size lends itself to unusual extension, enabling his pitches to get on hitters quickly, and Tredwell also has exceptional body control for such a tall pitcher. He keeps his long limbs in sync, repeats his delivery and pounds the strike zone, logging a 113/18 K/BB ratio in college. He has a high floor as a potential No. 4 starter if he can remain healthy, and Houston's knack for helping pitchers bolster their stuff could raise his ceiling.

2023

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 55 | Overall: 40

Tredwell ranked as one of the better pitchers in the 2021 high school class until he had Tommy John surgery in 2020 and didn't take the mound as a junior and senior. He went to UCLA and starred as a freshman closer in 2022 before moving to the rotation this spring, pitching well before his season ended in late April with back and rib injuries. The Astros still liked his size and feel for pitching to draft him in the second round and sign him for an over-slot $1,497,500.

While Tredwell's fastball sits at 91-93 mph and peaks at 95 -- fairly ordinary velocity -- it's difficult to hit because his 6-foot-8 frame, high arm slot and flat approach angle produce carry at the top of the strike zone. He can miss bats with two distinct breaking balls with depth, with his low-80s slider grading better than his upper-70s curveball. He also shows aptitude for throwing a mid-80s changeup with fade, though he doesn't use it much.

Tredwell has exceptional body control for such a tall pitcher, keeping his long limbs in sync and providing plenty of strikes. He posted a 113/18 K/BB ratio in 92 1/3 innings during two seasons with the Bruins. He has a high floor as a potential No. 4 starter if he can stay healthy and could be more than that if Houston can help him unlock more velocity.
