The 2023 international signing period could turn out to be a very productive one for the Phillies for a number of reasons. Top acquisition Starlyn Caba (who got $3 million) and Top 100 prospect Eduardo Tait have been used in trades to bring in big league help, while pitcher Wen-Hui Pan and Ferrebus, who signed out of Venezuela for just $70,000, are current Top 30 prospects. Ferrebus debuted in the Dominican Summer League after signing, then returned there in 2024, eventually playing his way to the Florida Complex League. He began his 2025 there before earning a bump up to full-season Clearwater, the first time he struggled anywhere offensively.
While injuries -- an elbow sprain in 2023, an ankle sprain in 2024 and what turned out to be a broken second metacarpal in his left hand last year -- have cut into his playing time since he signed, Ferrebus has consistently shown a knack for contact when he's been on the field. The right-handed hitter does not swing-and-miss much and can hit the ball extremely hard, though he's going to have to learn to find a better angle to get the ball in the air more. He's also an overly aggressive hitter who chases way too much, something that was exposed in his first taste of the Florida State League.
While Ferrebus has seen time behind the plate and at first base, the Phillies are bullish about the defensive progress he's made in his brief career. There's confidence he can catch long-term with decent hands and enough arm. He just needs reps, something he got more of as part of a Phillies prospect contingent that helped the Adelaide Giants win an Australian Baseball League title over the winter.

The 2023 international signing period might be the year of the bargain-price catcher for the Phillies. They landed Eduardo Tait out of Colombia for $90,000 while they scouted Ferrebus in Venezuela and signed him for just $70,000. He spent parts of two summers in the Dominican Summer League, hitting his way stateside and continuing to rake in the Florida Complex League. He carries a career .345/.437/.504 line into the 2025 season.
A right-handed hitter, Ferrebus has a good swing and is already showing a penchant for barreling up the baseball and registering big-time exit velocities. He’s strong and physical with a good swing geared for contact. He limits swing-and-miss with a career 14.4 percent strikeout rate to show for it and has shown the ability to drive the ball to all fields. Next up in his development will be to get him to add some loft with more consistency, with conviction there’s plenty of power to unlock.
Whether Ferrebus can stick behind the plate remains to be seen, though the Phillies like his catching frame and his internal motor. He’s not going to move the needle defensively, but his hands and arm should be playable enough. He has seen time at first as well, and should a move be necessary, that does put more pressure on the bat to develop, something the organization thinks will happen.

The Phillies went all-in during the 2023 international signing period to sign Starlyn Caba, giving the shortstop $3 million to sign, then trading him to the Marlins in the Jesús Luzardo deal in December, 2024. Caba wasn’t the only move they made on the international market in 2023, inking Ferrebus for just $70,000 when the period opened. He had a solid debut that summer in the Dominican Summer League, posting an .888 OPS. The backstop began 2024 back in the DSL before hitting his way to the United States and the Florida Complex League. He posted a .982 OPS over 24 games, with some evaluators saying he’d be a top two-round talent in the 2025 Draft.
Ferrebus is a big, strong and physical right-handed-hitting catcher who has already shown a knack for finding the barrel. He’s already registering excellent exit velocities with consistent hard contact. In his early career, he’s limited strikeouts (14.4 percent K rate) and drawn a few walks with a solid overall approach. The Phillies think there will be more power to come as he learns to elevate the ball with more consistency, something that will come with more reps and physical development.
The 6-foot-2 backstop should be able to stick behind the plate long-term, with decent hands and footwork and an arm that should play just fine in the future. He may grade out as average back there overall, neither adding nor subtracting value on that side of the ball, and the Phillies have gotten him some reps at first base to add to his versatility early on.
