May started his college career at Pima Community College before heading to the University of Arizona for his sophomore season. After an inconsistent year in the Wildcats’ rotation, May was on the move again, this time to Oregon State. With the exception of a month missed with an elbow strain, he has been a consistent anchor for the Beavers’ rotation.
A 6-foot-2 right-hander, May is largely a two-pitch starter in a Spencer Strider type of mold. His fastball sits in the 94-95 mph range, topping out at 97 mph, with good carry through the zone, though it doesn’t elicit much swing-and-miss. He throws his plus slider more than his fastball, and for good reason. He often tops 3,000 rpm on the low-80s power breaking ball, a true three-quarters slider with a ton of depth that misses a lot of bats. He does show a little feel for a changeup but doesn’t use it much.
While May doesn’t have pinpoint command, he is generally around the zone and should throw enough strikes at the next level to give him the chance to start. A little more of a third pitch might help, but the chance to end up with two plus pitches, as Strider has shown, can be plenty to start in the big leagues and a reason why teams are looking at May in the top few rounds.

May's winding college journey brought him to Oregon State -- his third school in as many years -- where he dominated as the Beavers' Friday night starter and raised his stock en route to going 70th overall to the Marlins in the 2023 Draft. The righty has barely seen the field since then, though. May did not pitch after signing for a below-slot $900,000 -- he had a heavy college workload and missed a month with a forearm injury -- and then arthroscopic elbow surgery delayed his pro debut until July 2025. He ended up logging 32 2/3 innings between Rookie ball, Single-A and the Arizona Fall League and heads into 2026 healthy for the first time in years.
At 6-foot-2 with a low release point, May has a sinker-slider profile, although he's changed his pitch mix a bit since college. The sweeping slider remains his bread-and-butter pitch with biting action that he can land for strikes or get chases on, and his sinking fastball -- up to 96 mph in starts and 98 in short stints -- has almost equal horizontal movement in the opposite direction. This year, he's been incorporating a high-80s cutter, which is dangerous glove side and a weapon against lefties, and his upper-80s changeup has promise but needs to land for strikes more.
May had solid control by the end of his college career, although he walked too many batters in his brief pro debut. Some of that can be chalked up to him working back from injuries in 2025. If he can stay healthy and improve his cutter or changeup as a platoon-neutral pitch, it's easy to see May becoming a back-end starter. If not, he could still profile as a reliever whose movement will play up even more in short stints.

May's college career took him from Pima (Ariz.) CC to Arizona to Oregon State. His stuff and control looked better than ever with the Beavers last spring, when he missed a month with an elbow strain before recovering to permit just nine earned runs across his final seven starts. The Marlins signed him for a below-slot $900,000 as a supplemental second-rounder and believe he may emerge as one of the best pitching prospects when he makes his pro debut in 2025.
May used his plus mid-80s slider almost half the time at Oregon State, and it comes with high spin rates and so much spin that it locks down both lefties and righties. While his two-seam fastball parks at 93-95 mph and reaches 98, it has more of a sink than carry profile and doesn't miss a lot of bats. His 87-90 mph changeup is firm but drops at the plate and rarely gets barreled.
Working from a low arm slot, May creates deception with a flat approach angle but not much in the way of extension. Given his delivery, he might find more success with a four-seamer that carries up in the strike zone and plays better off his slider. He provides consistent success and has the upside of a mid-rotation starter.

May pitched at three colleges in three years, moving from Pima (Ariz.) CC to Arizona to Oregon State. His stuff and control were better than ever with the Beavers this spring, though he missed a month early in the season with an elbow strain. He finished strong by allowing a total of nine earned runs in his final seven starts, including a 14-strikeout gem against Oregon, before signing for a below-slot $900,000 as a supplemental second-rounder.
May's best and most used offering is a mid-80s slider that features high spin rates and so much sweep that it shuts down both lefties and righties. His fastball sits at 93-95 mph and climbs as high as 98, but it doesn't miss a lot of bats. Though his changeup is quite firm at 87-90 mph, it drops at the plate and rarely gets barreled.
Working out of a low arm slot, May creates a flat approach angle but not much extension while providing regular strikes. Given his delivery, he might have a more effective fastball if he switched to a four-seamer, worked up in the strike zone and created more divergence from his slider. He could be a mid-rotation starter if he continues to improve.
