Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 55 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

After two seasons at Samford, Walton transferred to Arizona, where he had a career-best season with a 1.026 OPS, 14 homers and 19 stolen bases. Cleveland snagged him with the 66th overall pick in the 2025 Draft and signed him for $1.1 million, after which he played 16 games at Single-A with a solid .238/.324/.397 slash line but surprising strikeout issues after big improvements through his college years.

Walton is a power-speed threat from the right side who is built at 6-foot-3 like Captain America -- and he has the makeup to match. His bat speed is among the best in the Guardians' system, which he deploys with a big leg kick and a closed-off stance. Walton has become more selective with time, and how his somewhat noisy swing fares against more advanced pitching will be key, especially given how he has been vulnerable to pitches away.

Walton uses his swift legs well on the bases and in the field. He pushed 2025 supplemental first-rounder Brendan Summerhill off of center at Arizona, and Cleveland will give him every shot of sticking there, even if he may fit better in a corner. The Tennessee native is fearless and has solid instincts, but there are mixed reviews about his routes. Right-right outfielders who can even pass in center are rare, though, which gives him a decent floor as a bench bat.

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

After playing two years at Samford and performing well with wood bats in college leagues both summers, Walton transferred to Arizona. He helped lead the Wildcats to the 2025 College World Series, slashing .320/.437/.589 with 14 homers and 19 steals. His combination of physicality and well-rounded ability spurred the Guardians to draft him in the supplemental second round, where they signed him for $1.1 million.

Built along the lines of Mike Trout at 6-foot-3 and 219 pounds, Walton blossomed as a hitter with the Wildcats. Adopting a more selective approach allowed him to do a better job of tapping into his right-handed pull power. He uses his strength and bat speed to produce high exit velocities while making consistent contact, and he could do more damage if he launches balls in the air more regularly.

Walton has solid speed and some basestealing aptitude, giving him 20-20 potential. He pushed Rays supplemental first-rounder Brendan Summerhill to right field after arriving in Tucson and has a chance to stay in center field in pro ball, though he'll need to improve his instincts to be more than an average defender up the middle. His average arm strength is more than enough for the position.

A product of the Tennessee high school scene, Walton spent his first two seasons of college ball playing for Samford University in Alabama. He entered the transfer portal and headed west to Arizona for more exposure. The move has paid off and Walton has been able to display his physicality and tools against better competition to move him up Draft boards, though his performance lagged a bit in conference play.

A big, strong right-handed hitter, Walton has a bit of a linebacker-type build that's a little Mike Trout-ish at 6-foot-3 and 219 pounds. When Walton arrived in Tucson in the fall, his hit tool was a bit behind the others and he's still power over pure bat, showing some swing-and-miss. But he made some adjustments heading into the spring and has struck out less with the Wildcats than he did with Samford while drawing more walks. He's incorporated a leg kick to help him get to the inside fastball and has gotten more power to his pull side.

Walton runs well and showed this fall he can play a solid center field, moving Brendan Summerhill to right, with a decent arm to boot. It's an intriguing profile with strength and athleticism, and a team that thinks it can tease a little more consistency at the plate from Walton will take him on Day 2 of the Draft, perhaps seeing a Harrison Bader-type career in the future.
