Mitchell comes from a football family that includes an uncle (Keithen McCant) who quarterbacked in the Canadian Football League and an older brother (Richard Morrison) who played wide receiver at the University of Arizona. But Mitchell has been pointed toward a baseball future since he was a youngster and entered 2025 as one of the best high school left-handers in the Draft after pitching for the U.S. 18-and-under national team last summer. He performed well during the first month of his senior season and missed the rest of the spring with shoulder fatigue, but the Angels saw enough to use some leftover Tyler Bremner savings to sign him in the 13th round for $872,500.

Mitchell's fastball sits at 90-92 mph and tops out at 94, playing better than its velocity because he hides it well and it carries past barrels at the top of the strike zone. He displays fine aptitude for throwing an upper-70s curveball with depth that works well in tandem with the shape of his heater. He started dabbling with a low-80s changeup that fades and sinks, though he hasn’t used it much.

His ability to repeat his athletic three-quarters delivery allows Mitchell to provide consistent strikes. His slender 6-foot-3 frame has plenty of room to add muscle, which could add power to his fastball and curveball and make both of them plus offerings.
