The son of former big league pitcher Greg W. Harris, Trent spent 2019-21 as a third baseman/right-hander at High Point before blowing out his elbow in his third season and requiring Tommy John surgery. He transferred to NCAA Division II UNC Pembroke and performed well on both sides of the ball yet went undrafted as a 24-year-old in 2023. He earned Coastal Plain League pitcher of the year that summer while leading the circuit with a 0.30 ERA, prompting San Francisco to sign him for $10,000 as a free agent. He has dominated as a multi-inning reliever in his first year-plus in pro ball.
Harris features an explosive mid-90s fastball that reaches 97 mph with tremendous carry out of an over-the-top arm slot. His delivery helps him stay on top of a pair of potential plus breaking pitches with high spin rates, a tight 83-85 mph slider and a 79-82 mph curveball with more depth. He also has a low-80s changeup with some fade and tumble but has barely used it as a pro.
A quality athlete, Harris gets down the mound extremely well and his high slot gives hitters an unusual look. He has a long track record of providing strikes and has all the ingredients to become a starting pitcher. The Giants will see if he can maintain his stuff if they stretch him out in the rotation, and if he can't, they could expedite him to the Majors as a reliever.
