San Diego area scouts believed enough in Lowe, who wasn’t on many top radars as a Wake Forest commit out of Combine Academy in North Carolina, to push to make him the club’s first Day 3 pick in 2022. Using savings from earlier rounds, the organization signed the right-hander for $400,000, giving him closer to fifth-round money. Lowe started three games for Single-A Lake Elsinore in April but was shut down due to shoulder problems, and those issues arose again after he made an Arizona Complex League rehab start.
Lowe has good deception in his sturdy 6-foot-1 frame and can run his fastball up to the mid-90s with some explosiveness up in the zone. With some tailing action, the fastball is at its best when he’s locating it armside. He can plop his slider into the zone for a called strike against anyone sitting on the high heat, or he can get chases down and gloveside when needed too. His changeup could be average in time with more development but looked too firm at times as he dipped his toe into pro ball.
The righty threw a good amount of strikes when he was on the mound last season, but given his size already, there might not be a ton of projection remaining for his stuff to add another tick or two. The fastball-slider will play though as is, when healthy, and sticking to the mound will be Lowe’s biggest goal entering his age-21 campaign in 2024.

Hailing from Combine Academy in North Carolina, Lowe wasn’t exactly on many big radars coming into 2022, though he did have a commitment to pitch at Wake Forest. Padres area scouts, however, found a lot to like and pushed successfully enough for him to be part of the organization’s Draft class as its first Day 3 pick in the 11th round. Using some of the savings from senior signs in rounds 8-10, San Diego inked Lowe for $400,000, which is closer to fifth-round money. He made three starts for Single-A Lake Elsinore in 2023 before hitting the injured list with a shoulder issue.
The 6-foot-1 right-hander already touches the mid-90s with his fastball, often settling in a little below that, and can blow it by hitters up in the zone. His slider already shows promising sweep across the zone to give him a second above-average pitch, while he has the feel for at least an average changeup too, which is more than can be said for many prep arms.
Throwing the ball in the zone doesn’t look like it’ll be much of a problem for the hurler, at least at this stage in his career. However, as promising as the whole package is, there is some concern that his frame is close to maxed out, and considering he’ll already be in his age-20 season in 2023, he won’t have as long a route of development as other pitchers coming out of high school. It’s a more intriguing profile than is often found in the 11th round, and Lowe will be given every chance to justify San Diego’s early faith with rotation spots in the lower Minors.
