Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 45 | Cutter: 45 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 40

After getting cut by Southern California's club team as a freshman and varsity squad as a sophomore, Uberstine began working with former big leaguer Joe Biemel and gained more velocity. He parlayed two seasons at Northwestern and a brief stint in the MLB Draft League into getting drafted in the 19th round in 2021, only to blow out his elbow during Spring Training two years later. After missing all of 2023 and easing back in the following season, he led the Red Sox system in strikeouts (137) and innings (120 2/3) last year, reached Triple-A and claimed a spot on the 40-man roster.

Uberstine's fastball features ordinary velocity, averaging 93 mph and maxing out at 96, but it plays better than that because of his ability to backspin four-seamers with impressive carry. He also can run and sink two-seamers with a little less velo, though they can get hammered if he doesn't spot them down in the zone. His best secondary pitch is a fading mid-80s changeup, and he also has a fringy low-80s slider and upper-80s cutter.

Uberstine has an upright delivery that nevertheless produces a low release height and wide angle because he works from a nearly sidearm slot. He creates deception without compromising his ability to throw strikes, though he has to command his arsenal well to success because he can't overpower hitters. He's a tough competitor who might be able to pitch at the end of a rotation or serve as a long reliever.

2025

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 45 | Cutter: 45 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 40

Uberstine could have given up when Southern California's club team cut him as a freshman and he failed to make the Trojans' varsity squad as a sophomore, but he began working with former big leaguer Joe Biemel and gained more velocity. After he pitched two seasons at Northwestern and briefly in the MLB Draft League, the Red Sox made him a 19th-round pick in 2021. He recovered from Tommy John surgery that cost him the entire 2023 season to log a 3.58 ERA with 137 strikeouts in 120 2/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A in 2025, earning a spot on the 40-man roster.

While Uberstine's fastball parks at 93 mph and tops out at 96, it works because he can backspin four-seamers with carry up at the letters. He also uses a two-seamer with a tick less velocity that he can run and sink down in the zone, but it's not nearly as effective. His fading mid-80s changeup grades as average and is more reliable than his low-80s slider and upper-80s cutter.

Uberstine utilizes a nearly sidearm slot and low release height to create angle and deception with his offerings. He has no problem throwing strikes but must locate his pitches well because he can't overpower hitters. He doesn't have a huge ceiling but is on the verge of reaching Fenway Park.
