The Brewers signed Areinamo for $150,000 out of Venezuela in January 2021, and he was a dependable producer over his five years in the system. He burst onto the radar as an Arizona Complex League All-Star in 2022 and even saw time at Single-A Carolina and High-A Wisconsin that same summer. He hit .306 with four homers in 103 games back in the Carolina League a year later and jumped to the Midwest League for 2024, when he was the circuit’s leader in average (.301) and doubles (30) over 110 games. Areinamo was back with Wisconsin for 94 games in 2025 when he was traded to the Rays in late July for Major League catcher Danny Jansen.

The right-handed hitter has one of the most interesting hitting setups in baseball, taking the bat off his shoulder as the pitcher delivers and whipping it forward in the air almost like a lasso. It’s worked for him so far with solid contact rates, but his eagerness to expand the zone brings concern to his hitting profile. Some see a batter who can still spray the ball around the diamond. Others worry the chasing will catch up to Areinamo at the upper levels. He needs a solid average to bring value because he isn’t likely to get on base through walks, and his limited power lowers the ceiling more.

The 5-foot-8 infielder is a fringy runner but doubled his career high in steals to 32 in 2024. He’s moved around the dirt plenty early in his career, in part because Milwaukee was so loaded with great defensive shortstops in the lower levels, but he’s proven to be a strong fit at second base with good reactions and lateral movement but just an average arm. Even with that glovework, Areinamo might be headed toward being a utility player in the Majors if he can’t hone in more on the zone as a hitter.

A $150,000 signing out of Venezuela in January 2021, Areinamo carved out a prominent role in the Brewers organization in 2022 when he was named an Arizona Complex League All-Star after hitting .323/.416/.472 with as many walks as strikeouts (19) in 34 games. Milwaukee gave him looks at Single-A Carolina and High-A Wisconsin that summer, but he remained at the former for the duration of his 2023 season, finishing with a .306/.333/.407 line, four homers and 16 steals in 103 games.

Picture Gary Sheffield’s pre-swing bat movement. Now abbreviate it to one wiggle and make that one more pronounced, and you have Areinamo. It can look like he’s casting a spell by using his bat as a wand at times. That activity helps the right-handed hitter get his quick hands moving, and he does a nice job of making contact with an 8.3 percent swinging-strike rate that was eighth-best among Carolina League qualifiers. He can get overly aggressive in search of that contact however and lose out on chances for free passes; his 4.0 percent walk rate was fourth-worst among Single-A qualifiers. Standing 5-foot-8, Areinamo has mostly gap power at this stage.

The 20-year-old is a fringy runner but gives pitchers and catchers something to think about with his smart baserunning decisions. That lack of speed has moved him away from shortstop -- Milwaukee has quality defenders there at the lower levels -- and while he’s spent some time at third base, he’s a better fit for second because of just average arm strength.

Areinamo was not one of the most noteworthy players added by the Brewers on Jan. 15, 2021, when he signed for $150,000, but it hasn’t taken long for him to rise to some prominence. In his first move stateside, the Venezuela native was a 2022 Arizona Complex League post-season All-Star after hitting .323/.416/.472 with an even 19/19 K/BB ratio over 34 games. He moved to Single-A Carolina for 28 games in August and even got a seven-game look at High-A Wisconsin when the club needed a body in May/June.

Listed at 5-foot-10, 160 pounds, Areinamo isn’t going to pop in a workout, or to anyone giving a quick look at the field, but he finds meaningful ways to contribute, starting with his work at the dish. The right-handed hitter is mature in his approach at the plate with a willingness to fight pitches off and go the other way when needed. He’ll flash some quick hands in his pre-swing setup but manages to control the bat well enough to find barrels and limit strikeouts. There isn’t much power in that frame, calling into question just how valuable he can be offensively.

An average runner at best who earns some bonus points for making smart baserunning decisions, Areinamo has moved around from short to third to second as the Brewers have prioritized better pure defenders at the six. It’s just average arm strength too, and that makes it all the likelier he’ll land at second base if and when he needs to find a full-time spot.
