Video scouting report »

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 60 | Control: 40 | Overall: 40

Ever since Reed arrived at West Virginia, he’s shown both an ability to miss a lot of bats and a difficulty in finding the strike zone. He’s had the opportunity to both start and relieve for the Mountaineers, and scouts were hopeful to get a long look at him as part of WVU’s weekend rotation this spring. That never happened, and while it was a bit harder to see him out of the bullpen, he did earn All-Big 12 First Team status serving as the school’s closer.

Reed does have a very real three-pitch mix, a big reason why scouts wanted to see the tall, thin right-hander start. His fastball has averaged around 95 mph and touched 98 mph in shorter relief stints this year, but it’s actually his third-best pitch, one that he doesn’t command well and gets hit when it lacks life. He sells his mid-80s changeup well with good arm speed, and his tight slider, thrown around the same velocity, has also generated a ton of swings and misses.

With a longer arm action, Reed’s biggest obstacle is his command, as he’s put up big walk rates everywhere, including as a starter in the Cape Cod League last summer. A team taking him might want to help him iron out his delivery and send him out as a starter, knowing the stuff all ticks up in shorter stints out of the pen, where he could eventually serve in high-leverage situations.

2024

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 60 | Control: 40 | Overall: 40

Throughout his three years at West Virginia, Reed showed off bat-missing stuff as well as poor command of that stuff. He started and relieved for the Mountaineers and had his best statistical season closing as a junior in 2023, earning All-Big 12 First Team honors. He went to the Draft League to try and show scouts he had the ability to start, with uneven results at best, but the Pirates felt the arm strength and size were enough to take him in the fourth round of that year’s Draft. Developing as a starter so far, he pitched well enough in his first full season to earn a promotion from Single-A Bradenton to High-A Greensboro in late July.

Reed does have a very real pitch mix, a big reason why there was some hope the tall, thin right-hander could start. He has both a four-seam and two-seam fastball, up to 95-96 mph as a starter this year with Bradenton. He commands the sinker better and gets ground-ball outs with it when he’s not missing bats. But his fastball might be his third-best pitch. He sells his mid-80s changeup well with good arm speed, and his tight slider, thrown around the same velocity, has also generated a ton of swings-and-misses.

With a longer arm action, Reed’s biggest obstacle is his command as he’s put up big walk rates everywhere. He’s been given the opportunity to work on ironing out his delivery and his full repertoire as a starter for now. But it might be a safer bet to see him in the bullpen, where his stuff could tick up and be useful in high-leverage situations.
