Video scouting report »

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50

Thousand Oaks High School in California has had some solid big leaguers come from its program, most notably Kurt Stillwell and Jack Wilson. Wilson is now the head coach of the program and is helping get the next highly thought of middle infielder, Muncy, prepared for what could be a long and productive career.

Muncy, not related to the big leaguer of the same name, is a high-energy player who gets high marks for his desire to constantly work to get better. Muncy has the chance to be an average hitter with perhaps above-average power when all is said and done. He has the ability to use that power to all fields. He can get too big and his overall approach still needs work, leading to some swing and miss, but the future impact is definitely there.

An average runner with a solid arm, Muncy would undoubtedly head out as a shortstop and would play there for Arkansas should he go on to college, but he could end up sliding over to third or second eventually. Those who believe in him might see a Dansby Swanson type, with a bit more power and a touch less hitability, with an offensive ceiling of someone like Ian Kinsler.

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Muncy became just the second first-round pick ever selected from Thousand Oaks High School in California when the A’s took him 25th overall in the 2021 Draft and signed him for $2.85 million. Following a solid showing in his first full season as a professional, he enjoyed a breakthrough in 2023 in which he seemed to get better as the competition got tougher, hitting .275/.353/.411 with 19 homers and 35 doubles over 123 games between High-A Lansing and Double-A Midland before getting some extra work in the Arizona Fall League.

There is no relation between Muncy and his namesake who stars for the Dodgers, though he does carry his own set of special hitting tools that are really starting to show up. He demonstrated real plate discipline growth by taking more walks upon moving to Double-A and adjusted his swing to become shorter and more connected. He drives the ball to all fields and continues to tap into his power, which the A’s believe will continue to amplify on bigger stages.

Muncy’s competitive spirit stands out in games. There once were questions as to whether he might switch positions at some point, but they have seemingly been answered. While the A’s do want to keep him versatile, his solid arm and strides made on defense this past year give him a good chance to stick at shortstop for the long haul.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Coached by former All-Star shortstop Jack Wilson at Thousand Oaks High School, Muncy became just the second first-round pick ever selected from the school when the A’s took him 25th overall in the 2021 MLB Draft. He signed for $2.85 million and bulked up over that winter, impressing the A’s with a solid showing in his first full season as a professional. He accumulated 50 extra-base hits, including 19 homers, over 123 games in a 2022 campaign that began at Single-A Stockton and ended at High-A Lansing.

Muncy shares no relation to his namesake who stars for the Dodgers, though he does carry some pop of his own. The right-handed hitter continues to grow into his power and can drive the ball to all fields. He does have a tendency to get overly aggressive at times, which can lead to some swing-and-miss, though a refining of his overall approach should come as he gains more experience.

Muncy is a great competitor who is fun to watch for the spirit in which he plays the game. The overaggression can sometimes carry over on defense as he makes some fielding mistakes not atypical with younger players. A hard worker whose speed, defense and arm are solid, the tools are there for him to stick as a shortstop for the long haul, though the A’s will likely keep him versatile around the infield as he moves up the system.

2022

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50

Groomed by his head coach at Thousands Oaks High School, former Major League shortstop Jack Wilson, Muncy was selected 25th overall by the A’s in 2021 and signed for $2.85 million to become just the second first-round pick ever drafted in the school’s history. He made his brief pro debut in the Arizona Complex League last summer.

Though he shares no relation with his namesake who stars for the Dodgers, this Muncy can also do some impressive things with the bat. The power was on display during a pre-Draft workout in which the A’s witnessed him effortlessly drive the ball out of the Oakland Coliseum to all fields. His overall approach at the plate still requires some fine-tuning to bring down the swing-and-misses, though that should come with time.

Between his solid speed, defense and arm, Muncy has the tools needed to stick at shortstop. His athleticism gives him the versatility to also handle second and third if needed. With player comparisons ranging from Alex Bregman to Dansby Swanson, the expectations were in his first full season of pro ball as he tries to reach his ceiling as a power-hitting infielder.

2021

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50

Thousand Oaks High School in California has had some solid big leaguers come from its program, most notably Kurt Stillwell and Jack Wilson. Wilson is now the head coach of the program and helped Muncy become the highest-drafted player from the school since Stillwell, who was the No. 2 overall pick back in 1983, and the school’s second first-round pick ever when the A’s took him No. 25 overall in the 2021 Draft and signed him for $2.85 million.

An average runner with a solid arm, Muncy has headed out as a shortstop as a pro, but he could end up sliding over to third or second eventually. Some see a little Dansby Swanson in him, with a bit more power and a touch less hitability, with an offensive ceiling
