Scouting grades: Fastball: 65 | Slider: 40 | Control: 55 | Overall: 45

Walters began his college career at Eastern Florida State College, a two-year school in Brevard County. He moved to Miami after the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and pitched well out of the bullpen right away in 2021. A year ago, he was among the Division I leaders with saves and was taken in Round 18 by the Orioles. He opted to return to the Hurricanes, and after some talk about moving him into the rotation last fall, he’s been his usual reliable self as a reliever.

Walters still leans very heavily on his one plus pitch, his fastball. The right-hander’s heater touches 99 mph, sits over 95 and misses bats because of plus life up in the zone and deception in his delivery. He’s not throwing it quite as frequently as he did in 2022 (more than 90 percent), but it’s still very much his go-to pitch. He has mixed in his mid-80s slider more frequently, and while it’s missed a ton of bats this spring, it’s a slurvy below-average offering.

The reliever’s effectiveness is aided by the fact that he’s around the zone, walking fewer than two per nine in 2022 and 2023. It’s been encouraging that he’s committed to throwing his secondary pitch more with Miami, but he’ll have to find a way to sharpen it at the next level. Three years of success in the ACC won’t hurt his Draft stock, though.

Walters wasn’t heavily recruited coming out of high school in Florida and headed to Eastern Florida State College, a two-year school in Brevard County. After a year there shortened by the pandemic, he moved to Miami and made an immediate impact out of the bullpen. He became the Canes’ closer in 2022 and has been among the Division I leaders in saves.

At this point, Walters is pretty much a one-pitch pitcher. The 6-foot-4 right-hander throws his fastball more than 90 percent of the time and goes right after hitters with it. It tops out at 99 mph and averages over 95. Even though opponents know it’s coming, they can’t hit it, with a whiff rate of over 40 percent this spring. There’s deception in his delivery, as he steps across his body and hides the ball well, making it tough to pick up, and the pitch has really good life up in the zone. 

Walters does have a slurvy breaking ball at present, but it’s a below-average show-me pitch at this point. He’s been filling up the strike zone consistently this year, and while he obviously will have to work on finding a secondary pitch to his unhittable fastball, it’s hard to argue with the success he’s had at the end of Miami’s pen.

Walters dominated as a college closer at Miami, recording more saves (26) than he allowed earned runs (16) while compiling a 1.41 ERA with a 170/22 K/BB ratio in 102 innings over three years. Signability concerns as a sophomore-eligible dropped him to the 18th round, and the Orioles in 2022 before he went in the supplemental second round last July and signed for $955,275. The Guardians plan on using him as a multi-inning reliever, and he could be one of the first players from the 2023 Draft to reach the Majors.

Walters has a simple plan on the mound, attacking with a fastball that he used 84 percent of the time in his last two seasons with the Hurricanes. His heater parks at 94-96 mph and touches 99 with riding action, and it plays even better than its velocity thanks to his command and deception. His solid slider operates in the low 80s with some depth and can catch hitters off guard if they're sitting on his fastball.

While there were questions whether Walters could thrive in pro ball with such a heater-heavy approach, he went straight to Double-A and dominated this spring before earning a promotion to Triple-A in June. He has a sound delivery and repeats it well, which allowed him to pound the strike zone in college before showing inconsistent control in his pro debut. If he can do a better job of locating his fastball and slider where he wants, he'll be at least a set-up man.

It sits at 94-96 mph in short stints, touches 99 with riding action and is further enhanced by his command and deception. His low-80s slider features some depth and plays up because hitters usually are looking for his heater. 

As he faces more advanced hitters, Walters may need to mix in his slider more often and dust off his firm upper-80s changeup with fade. With sound mechanics, he repeatedly fills the zone. His fastball and strike-throwing ability could make him one of the first players from the 2023 Draft to reach the big leagues.
