Scouting Report

2024

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 40 | Slider: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

McDaniels was a find of Dodgers area scout Jonah Rosenthal and signed as an undrafted free agent in August 2021 while he was rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. The 2024 season was his first full healthy season, though he did appear in 16 games, mostly in A ball, in 2023. He began last year back in Rancho Cucamonga, moved to High-A Great Lakes after 11 games and then finished the year in Double-A, posting a combined 3.19 ERA, .229 BAA and 10.3 K/9 rate. He’ll get the chance to stick on a big league staff after the Angels took him in the Major League phase of December’s Rule 5 Draft.

A 6-foot-2 left-hander, McDaniels likely profiles best coming out of the bullpen, which he has done for most of his pro career. He typically sits 94-95 mph with his fastball, dialing it up to 97 mph. He can spin two different breaking balls, with his 87-89 mph slider showing glimpses of being a potential out pitch, and he’ll mix in a slower curve as well. He’s shown a propensity for missing bats (10.5 career K/9 rate) and getting groundball outs (2.35 GO/AO).

McDaniels doesn’t have pinpoint command but is generally around the zone, and that could continue to improve the further removed from TJ surgery he gets. He did make seven starts to begin the 2024 season, and while Angels GM Perry Minasian talked about how hard it is to find good left-handed relievers following the Rule 5 Draft, he didn’t rule out giving McDaniels the chance to start down the road.

2018

Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Curveball: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 45

South Carolina hasn't had a high school left-hander taken in the first five rounds since the Phillies popped Mike Martin at No. 5 overall in 1970. McDaniels, a two-way star on Pee Dee Academy's (Mullins) 2-A state championship team in 2017, is talented enough to break that drought. He also could blossom into a high pick three years from now if he attends Coastal Carolina.

While McDaniels is more about projection than present stuff, he's a southpaw with life on his fastball and feel for spin. His fastball usually ranges from 86-92 mph with sink and should develop into a solid offering as he adds strength to his slender frame. His curveball already shows flashes of becoming a plus pitch with some power and depth.

McDaniels also has some aptitude for throwing a changeup. He's athletic and repeats his delivery well, working down in the zone from a three-quarters arm slot.
