After debuting in the big leagues as a 20-year-old September callup and then winning a spot on the Nationals' postseason roster, Robles, with his off-the-charts athleticism and five standout tools, appeared poised to make a significant impact for the Nats in 2018. That outlook changed quickly when he suffered a hyperextended left elbow while attempting a diving catch in his fourth game of the season at Triple-A -- an injury that not only required a three-month stint on the disabled list, but also opened the door for teenage phenom Juan Soto. Robles made a healthy return to the field in July, performed well in Triple-A and then hit .288/.348/.525 with Washington following his second September callup in as many years.
Robles is a plus hitter from the right side of the plate with a short, explosive swing that yields hard contact from line to line. Though not a power threat, Robles has enough juice in his bat to project at least average game power, and he'll always offer value with his on-base skills because he has an advanced approach and controls the strike zone well. Robles' plus-plus speed is his biggest weapon and he ranked second among Nats big leaguers in sprint speed (29.3 feet per second, per Statcast) last season, trailing only Trea Turner (30.1). That speed also makes Robles a game-changing defender in center field, where he has exceptional range and instincts, as well as arm strength that's among the best in the Minors at the position.
Robles has come a long way in his development since signing for $225,000 as a 16-year-old in July 2013, but, so far, he's only scraped the surface of his potential. Robles' speed and defense give him an inherently high floor as a big leaguer, while his ceiling of a top-of-the-order center fielder who hits for both average and power could make him a perennial All-Star.
