Scouting Report

2025

Scouting grades: Fastball: 65 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 40 | Control: 45 | Overall: 45

The Angels have enjoyed going over slot to sign high school pitchers, often using the opening round of Day 3 of the Draft to get something done with excess bonus pool money. The 2024 Draft provided another opportunity when they were able to lure Gregory-Alford, a big hard-throwing right-hander from the Colorado prep ranks, away from his commitment to Virginia by giving him $1.96 million (second-round money) to sign. Gregory-Alford had raised his profile on the summer showcase circuit prior to his senior year, threw well for Team USA in international competition and created a buzz by popping triple digits at the Draft Combine.

The Angels didn’t ramp Gregory-Alford up for competitive pitching last summer, letting him mostly get some work in bullpens and at instructs. He’s very much more of a thrower than a complete pitcher right now, but he has two really interesting building blocks for a foundation. His heater can be fairly straight at times, but it gets on hitters quickly thanks to extension from his 6-foot-5 frame and he routinely can dial it up into the upper 90s. He combines it with a hard slider that could be a true out pitch in the future. He didn’t need a changeup against Colorado competition, but evaluators had seen one in the bullpen on occasion.

While Gregory-Alford has a fairly clean delivery, he’s struggled to consistently find the strike zone when he speeds his mechanics up too much. Refining that and developing a third pitch could give him the chance to start long term, but he may be a bit of a project with patience required.

The standard-bearer for Colorado high school pitchers who signed and went on to bigger and better things is Hall of Famer Roy Halladay, a first-round pick back in 1995. Since then, only four prep arms from the Centennial State have been drafted in the top three rounds, though pitchers like Kevin Gausman and Marco Gonzales went on to college and were eventual first-round picks. After solid summer showcase circuit performances that culminated in six shutout innings and three saves for Team USA in international competition, then an eye-opening stint in which he threw 100 mph at the Draft Combine, Gregory-Alford didn’t join the others in the early rounds, but he did get second-round money from the Angels ($1.96 million) in Round 11.

Gregory-Alford’s size and arm strength stand out more than anything else. The 6-foot-5 right-hander is all about power with what’s pretty much been a two-pitch mix to date. He has a quick arm that delivers fastballs he can dial up to north of 97 mph, not something often seen from Colorado high schoolers. It’s a fairly straight heater, and it can get on hitters in a hurry because of the way he uses his size and extension, though it gets hit more than it should and he doesn’t consistently command it. He combines it with a hard slider that can be nasty at times and miss bats. He’ll occasionally warm up with a changeup, but hasn’t used it in games.

For a guy his size, Gregory-Alford’s delivery is fairly clean, but he’s struggled to be a consistent strike-thrower. The upside potential is there, but it might take some time for him to refine his control and add a third pitch if he wants to reach his ceiling as a big league starter.

Scouts were heading to Colorado to check on the Virginia recruits progress with mixed reports on his ability to refine his control, add a third pitch and show he can go deeper into starts to allay concerns about reliever risk.
