A late addition to A.J. Preller's fabled 2016-17 international class, Bolaños inked his signing bonus a month after international signing day. After defecting from Cuba, Bolaños signed a $2 million deal with the Padres at age 19 on Aug. 2. He had spent the previous season playing professionally in Cuba's Serie Nacional, where he posted a 4.78 ERA as one of its youngest players.

It took Bolaños some time to adjust to professional ball in the United States. He posted a 4.41 ERA in his pro debut season at Class A Fort Wayne, then a 5.11 mark in year two at Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore. But in that span, he honed his command and turned his slider into a high-ceiling swing-and-miss offering. Bolaños had some early success in 2019, starting the year at Lake Elsinore.

At 6-foot-3, Bolaños features a strong starter's build, and he could still grow into his frame a bit. His fastball sits around 93 mph, though it can touch 96-97. Still, Bolaños has work to do to perfect his secondary options. The slider is furthest along, though the curveball has potential as well. Bolaños makes his delivery seem smooth, even though it has quirks to it. The Padres are fine with those quirks, given Bolaños' athletic nature. Ultimately, he probably projects as a back-of-the-rotation arm, but he's got plenty of refinement ahead of him.
