Scouting Report

2020

Read finally began to capitalize on his offensive potential during the second half of the 2016 season, and he broke out in earnest the following year by hitting .265 with a career-high 17 homers in his first Double-A campaign. He finished the season in the Major Leagues and was named the Nationals’ Bob Boone Award winner after the season on the merits of his leadership and professional. A season-opening 80-game suspension in 2018 after a positive offseason test for the steroid Boldenone derailed Read’s progress, and he struggled at the plate in the upper Minors upon returning. Back at Triple-A in 2019, Read rebounded to hit a career-high 20 homers in his age-25 season before joining the Nats in the big leagues as a September callup.

Read has always had natural hitting ability, with a short right-handed swing that produces contact to all fields as well as above-average pull-side power. While strikeouts have never been an issue for the right-handed backstop, his aggressive approach and corresponding low walk rates raise fair questions about the potential utility of Read’s bat at the highest level.

Defensively, Read’s above-average arm strength and catch-and-throw skills have helped him throw out 37 percent of basestealers in nine Minor League seasons. With usable right-handed power and defense that could be average with further improvements, Read still has a chance to carve out a role as a big league backup.

Read finally began to capitalize on his offensive potential during the second half of the 2016 season, and he broke out in earnest the following year by hitting .265 with a career-high 17 homers in his first Double-A campaign. He finished the season in the Major Leagues, collecting three hits in 11 at-bats, and was named the club's Bob Boone Award winner after the season on the merits of his leadership and professionalism. All of his progress came to a halt in 2018, however, as Read received a season-opening 80-game suspension after a positive offseason test for the steroid Boldenone, and he struggled at the plate between Double-A and Triple-A upon returning.

Read has a mature approach and natural hitting ability, with a short right-handed swing that produces contact to all fields as well as above-average raw power. However, the game power Read showed in 2017 wasn't there last year, prompting some to speculate that his power potential may have been inflated by the performance-enhancing drug. But scouts still generally view him as a decent hitter who makes a lot of contact and understands the strike zone.

Behind the plate, Read's above-average arm strength and solid catch-and-throw skills have helped him throw out 36.7 percent of attempted basestealers in his career through 2018. His defense could be above-average with further improvements, which, when combined with Read's hitting ability, portend to a backup role in the big leagues.

The Nationals have long believed in Read's offensive potential, viewing him as someone who would hit for both average and power at a premium position. The Dominican catcher began to do so late in the 2016 season and then broke out in earnest in his first Double-A campaign, hitting .265 with a career-high 17 home runs. He finished the season in the Major Leagues, collecting three hits in 11 at-bats. But after all his progress, Read will miss the first 80 games of the 2018 season after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug in February.

Read has a mature approach, natural hitting ability and power potential. He knows how to control the strike zone to his advantage and shows good discipline, while his quick right-handed swing produces loud contact to all fields. Becoming comfortable turning on the ball and more aggressive firing his barrel has allowed Read to better tap into his above-average raw power, as he connected on some of the longest home runs in his career in 2017.

Read's development behind the plate in the last two seasons has Nats club officials believing he can catch in the big leagues. His above-average arm strength and solid catch-and-throw skills helped him throw out 30.6 percent of attempted basestealers in the Eastern League, where he also made noticeable gains and both a blocker and receiver. Read will be limited in 2018 in the wake of his suspension, but he has requisite offensive and defensive tools to profile as a regular.

2017

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 30 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Since reaching full-season ball for the first time in 2015, Read has had a tendency to begin each year slowly before turning the corner in the second half and finishing strong. That certainly was the case last season at Class A Advanced Potomac, as the Dominican native broke out to hit .272/.335/.465 after the All-Star break following a non-descript showing during the first half. Fearing he might be selected in the Rule 5 Draft, the Nationals added Read to their 40-man roster in November, and he rewarded them by earning All-Star honors in his first Double-A campaign

Read stands out most for his mature approach and natural hitting ability. He knows how to control the strike zone to his advantage and shows good discipline, while his quick right-handed swing produces loud contact to all fields. He's still learning to tap into his above-average raw power, which he shows to all fields, and scouts believe he'll start to clear more fences as he moves up the ladder.

Read was one of the Nationals' most improved prospects in 2016, and much of that had to do with the strides he made as a blocker and receiver. He has above-average arm strength and solid catch-and-throw skills, and the combination makes him effective at controlling the running game. While Read's overall defense requires further refinement, scouts are increasingly confident that he'll be able to remain behind the plate.

2016

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 45 | Run: 30 | Arm: 60 | Field: 40 | Overall: 45

Read broke out in the New York-Penn League in 2014, setting career highs in numerous offensive categories while also making strides behind the plate. While he got off to a slow start last year in his full-season debut at Class A Hagerstown, the Dominican native was able to right the ship during the second half and earned a promotion to Class A Advanced Potomac in early September. However, he was unable to build on that success during his return to the Carolina League in 2016.

Read stands out most for his mature approach and natural hitting ability. He knows how to control the strike zone to his advantage and shows good discipline, while his quick right-handed swing produces loud contact to all fields. He's still learning to tap into his above-average raw power, and scouts believe he'll start to clear more fences as he moves up the ladder.

Read isn't nearly as advanced defensively, though, and there's some doubt that he can catch in the big leagues. His arm strength is his best asset, one that has helped him throw out nearly 41 percent of would-be basestealers in his career entering 2016, but he'll need to improve his below-average receiving skills to stick behind the plate.

2015

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 45 | Run: 30 | Arm: 60 | Field: 40 | Overall: 45

Read had the best season of his young career as a 20-year old in the New York-Penn League in 2014. The Dominican native set career highs in nearly every offensive category, while also taking a step forward defensively.

Read has an advanced approach at the plate for his age, showing a good understanding of the strike zone and a knack for hitting. His strength produces solid power and he gets to it in games well.

Defensively, Read still has some work to do. He has above-average arm strength and threw out 47 percent of would-be basestealers in 2014. Like most young catchers, he'll need to continue to improve his receiving and game management as he advances in the Minor Leagues.
