Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 40 | Control: 40 | Overall: 40
One of Georgia's best prep pitching prospects in 2019, David slid to the Diamondbacks in the 35th round amid signability concerns and opted to attend Auburn instead. He never pitched for the Tigers during the pandemic-truncated 2020 season before bouncing from Gordon State (Ga.) JC to Northwest Florida State JC to NAIA program Southeastern (Fla.) before the Astros drafted him in 2024's 10th round as a fifth-year senior. He moved from Single-A to Double-A in his first full pro season, compiling a 3.47 ERA with 87 strikeouts in 85 2/3 innings.
David's fastball parks at 95-96 mph and peaks at 98, and he maintained that velocity throughout 2025. It features carry and armside run. His tight mid-80s slider doesn't get a lot of chases but does generate a lot of in-zone swings and misses, and he can turn it into an 89-91 mph cutter on occasion. After focusing primarily on his heater and slider in college, he has worked on incorporating a low-80s curveball and an upper-80s changeup with depth but has trouble landing both for strikes.
There's effort in David's delivery that has prevented him from throwing consistent strikes, so he's more of multi-inning reliever than a starter in the long run. He spent the first two months of 2025 in the rotation at Single-A Fayetteville before shifting to the bullpen. He'll pitch at age 25 this season, and the less challenging role will accelerate his timetable to the big leagues.

David ranked among the better high school pitching prospects in Georgia in 2019, but dropped to the D-backs in the 35th round amid signability concerns before heading to Auburn. He never pitched for the Tigers in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and bounced from Gordon State (Ga.) JC to Northwest Florida State JC to NAIA program Southeastern (Fla.) before joining the Astros as a 23-year-old 10th-rounder in 2024. He reached Double-A in his first full pro season, posting a 3.47 ERA with 87 strikeouts in 85 2/3 innings between three stops.
David boasts one of the best fastball/slider combinations in the system. He sits at 95-96 mph and touches 98 with carry and armside run on his heater, and he maintained that velocity throughout 2025. His tight mid-80s slider doesn't elicit many chases but does produce a lot of swings and misses in the strike zone.
Though David can turn his slider into an 89-91 mph cutter and also fiddles with an upper-80s changeup with depth and a low-80s curveball, he's mainly a two-pitch guy. There's some effort to his delivery and he doesn't have much history of throwing strikes, so he's probably more of a reliever in the long run. The Astros deployed him as a starter in Single-A for the first two months of last season before moving him to the bullpen.
