Scouting Report

2020

Just before a rules change would limit international spending, the White Sox gave Robert a $26 million bonus (the second-largest ever for an amateur) and paid nearly as much in penalty tax in May 2017. Knee, ankle and thumb injuries curtailed his first two pro seasons, but he began to show what he could do in the Arizona Fall League at the end of 2018. That set the stage for a monster 2019 in which he became the Minor Leagues' youngest 30-30 player since 1999, led them with 314 total bases and posted the first 30-30-300 season since Jose Cardenal in 1961.

Signed to a six-year, $50 million contract with two club options in January -- before he made his big league debut -- Robert will make that deal look like a bargain if he approaches his lofty ceiling. Few players anywhere can match his electric combination of bat speed and foot speed, both of which grade as well above average. His huge right-handed power plays to all fields and he repeatedly drives the ball in the air, though he may have to develop more patience when pitchers refuse to challenge him.

Considered more of a solid runner before he left Cuba, Robert started showing dramatically improved speed during the tryout process. He still could use some refinement as a basestealer and center fielder, though he's fast enough to already be an asset in both regards. Some scouts consider his arm a third well above-average tool and he's capable of playing anywhere in the outfield.

7/18: Robert off to hot start in Triple-A

Shortly before new rules severely curtailed international bonus payments, the White Sox signed Robert for $26 million -- the second-highest ever for an amateur -- and a matching amount as a tax penalty in May 2017. They expected him to move quickly after he had batted .401/.526/.687 as an 18-year-old in Cuba's top league in 2016, but his first two pro seasons were shortened by knee, ankle and thumb injuries. He finally began to showcase his exciting package of tools in the Arizona Fall League last offseason, a prelude to putting up monster numbers in 2019 while rising from Class A Advanced to Triple-A.

Though he's not a switch-hitter or an infielder, Robert has a lot of similarities to Yoan Moncada, who set the amateur bonus record with $31 million from the Red Sox before they sent him to Chicago in the Chris Sale trade. He has electric bat speed, well above-average raw power and speed, and the upside of solid or better tools across the board. Also like Moncada, the right-handed hitter comes with some swing-and-miss concerns and will need to improve his plate discipline to realize his offensive potential.

Robert went from showing solid speed in Cuba to clocking sub-6.3-second 60-yard dashes during the tryout process, and even if he loses a step as he matures physically, he could be a 30-30 player. He's still a bit raw with his reads and jumps in center field but he has the physical ability to become a solid defender up the middle with more experience. If he has to move to a corner, his strong arm and offensive profile will fit well in right field.

Five months after acquiring Yoan Moncada from the Red Sox in the Chris Sale trade at the 2016 Winter Meetings, the White Sox signed the outfield version. They paid a $26 million bonus -- the second-highest ever given to an amateur, behind Moncada's $31 million -- and a matching amount as a penalty for exceeding their bonus pool to land Robert, a five-tool athlete who hit .401/.526/.687 as an 18-year-old in Cuba's top league in 2016. He has performed well in pro ball when healthy, but he had minor knee and ankle injuries in 2017 and has missed much of this season after damaging ligaments in his left thumb.

Moncada has the advantages of being a switch-hitter and an infielder, but otherwise Robert is quite similar to him. A right-handed hitter, he has a lightning-fast bat with well above-average raw power and speed to match. He also comes with some swing-and-miss concerns, though he mitigates them somewhat with his willingness to take walks.

Considered more of a solid runner while in Cuba, Robert got faster after defecting and posted sub-6.3 second 60-yard dashes while trying out for teams. His lean 6-foot-3 frame has plenty of room for additional muscle, so he'll probably slow down some as he matures physically. He could remain in center field and has the solid arm strength to profile in right field if he has to move to a corner.

2017

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 65 | Arm: 55 | Field: 55 | Overall: 55

The most touted Cuban prospect since Yoan Moncada, Robert joined his former national team teammate in the White Sox organization when he signed for $26 million in May (the White Sox also paid a matching overage tax penalty). That's the second-highest bonus ever given to an amateur, behind only the $31.5 million the Red Sox paid Moncada two years earlier. Robert has a long track record of success in international tournaments and Cuban leagues, including batting .401/.526/.687 as an 18-year-old in Cuba's Serie Nacional in 2016.

While they play different positions, Robert has a lot of similarities to Moncada. A right-handed hitter, Robert pairs electrifying bat speed that should translate into considerable power with well above-average speed. Both come with some swing-and-miss concerns, though Moncada's didn't really surface until he reached Double-A.

Considered more of a solid runner when he defected, Robert has gotten quicker and recorded sub-6.3 second times in the 60-yard dash. His lean 6-foot-3 frame figures to add more muscle, so he probably will slow down some once he matures physically. He has a chance to remain in center field and enough arm strength to easily handle right field should he move to a corner.
