Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

Kelly bounced around a bit as an amateur, going from a two-way high school standout in Northern California to starting his college career at Texas A&M. After a redshirt year, he moved to McLennan Community College and played both ways, then was on the move again, this time to Arizona State as a pitcher only. He missed a bunch of bats as a reliever, helping him land in the sixth round of the 2025 Draft, and he headed up to High-A to get his feet wet professionally. He capped things off by striking out the side to get the save that gave Everett a Northwest League championship.

The 6-foot-4 Kelly is strong and physical and comes at hitters largely with a two-pitch mix and a funky delivery. His four-seam fastball topped out at 99 mph in college, and it misses bats thanks to its carry up in the zone. He backs it up with his 79-84 mph slider that can have good depth and bite to it at times, a breaking ball that could be at least above average if he can find the strike zone with it more. He had a changeup for lefties on occasion at ASU, but he might not need it, and there was some talk of him bringing a two-seamer he used to feature back into his repertoire.

Kelly’s unusual mechanics come with a ton of effort and a low three-quarters arm slot and cross-body delivery. But he tends to get down the mound well and throw a decent amount of strikes. If he can be around the zone enough, especially with his slider, it’s not out of the question to see him in high-leverage relief situations in the big leagues.

Kelly was a two-way standout from the San Francisco area who originally headed to Texas A&M. After redshirting his freshman year, however, he transferred to McLennan Community College, where he both pitched and hit, before moving on to focus on pitching at Arizona State. He missed enough bats with his power stuff to get noticed by the Mariners, who took him in the sixth round of the 2025 Draft and signed him for $325,000. He made his brief pro debut with High-A Everett after signing and picked up the save by striking out the side to give the AquaSox the Northwest League title.

Pitching solely from the stretch, the strong, physical 6-foot-4 Kelly provides two excellent power pitches coming from an unorthodox delivery. A decision to ditch a low-90s two-seamer for a riding four-seamer that touched 99 mph with the Sun Devils was a solid one, as the heater misses plenty of bats up in the zone. He couples it with a short and hard 78-84 mph slider that was getting more depth and late bite as his college season progressed, with some scouts in the Four Corners thinking it could be plus in time, especially if he can land it in the zone more consistently.

Kelly did have a seldomly used changeup to get lefties to chase in college, but he probably can succeed in pro ball with the fastball-slider combination, and the Mariners think there's a chance he can reincorporate the two-seamer for a different look. Though he's max effort with a low three-quarters cross-body delivery, he's largely balanced and gets down the mound well, giving him the chance to throw enough strikes to perhaps one day handle high-leverage situations in a big league bullpen.
