After an uneven college career that began at Texas Tech, the Orioles drafted Wells in the fourth round out of Texas State in 2023, betting they could add polish to Wells’ tantalizing raw stuff. He struggled in his first full season of pro ball, finishing with a 6.71 ERA and .280 BAA over 60 ⅓ IP, but seemed to turn a corner last season following offseason workouts with Nathan Eovaldi. Wells returned to the mound throwing harder and proved more durable, seeing much better results by pitching his way to Triple-A by the end of the year.

Wells is a right-hander with a bulldog mentality on the mound who throws everything hard. His fastball lives in the upper-90s and can hit triple-digits, and Wells has the ability to ride it up in the zone or sink it to generate ground balls. He’ll employ three secondary offerings with a low-80s curve that features depth and a harder sweeper, and he swapped in a 90 mph cutter last year in place of a changeup he grew out of the habit of using.

Wells commanded everything better in his second season and throws enough strikes, but there is also a feeling his pure stuff is good enough to miss more bats than he did. Though the Orioles have developed him as a starter, Wells only completed more than five innings in two of his first 46 pro starts. His premium fastball and solid breaking stuff could be nasty in relief, and may destine Wells for more of a multi-inning fireman or swingman type of role.

After a year of pitching in relief at Texas Tech, Wells took his arm strength to Texas State for a chance to start. He wasn’t able to repeat his sophomore success the following year, but the Orioles liked the raw tools on the mound enough to take him in the fourth round of the 2023 Draft. He struggled in his first full season of pro ball, finishing with a 6.71 ERA and .280 BAA over 60 1/3 IP. Offseason workouts with Nathan Eovaldi seem to have paid dividends as he’s been throwing harder with better command during a strong 2025 campaign.

A right-hander who topped out at 95 mph in his last year of college ball, Wells now possesses a fastball that averages better than 96 and has touched triple-digits, while it can have carry up in the zone or some sink down. He’ll employ a pair of breaking balls in a low-80s curve with depth and a harder 90 mph slider-cutter. He doesn’t use his changeup very often.

In addition to throwing harder, Wells did a much better job of finding the strike zone in his second professional season, though he did miss fewer bats. Continued refinement of his command -- as well as a viable offspeed offering -- could give him the chance to start long-term, though his premium fastball and solid breaking stuff could be nasty in a bullpen role.

After spending his first college season as a reliever at Texas Tech in 2021, Wells transferred to Texas State and got the chance to start. The move paid off, as he earned All-Sun Belt Conference honors, beat Stanford in NCAA regional action and continued to thrive in the Cape Cod League. Despite an up-and-down junior season, he could become the Bobcats' highest-drafted pitcher since 2000 first-rounder Blake Williams.

Though Wells' fastball velocity has been down a tick or two this spring, sitting in the low 90s and topping out at 95, he's still getting it past hitters with high spin rates and carry at the letters or downhill plane lower in the zone. He also generates good spin on a pair of breaking pitches, with his 78-82 mph downer curveball grading better than his 84-89 mph slider/cutter with tighter break. He doesn't use his changeup very often and it gets too firm at times, though it does have some bat-missing fade.

Wells has improved significantly since high school, when there were questions about his maturity and he threw with significant effort and head whack. He has grown up and cleaned up his delivery, allowing him to provide strikes unless he lapses into overthrowing. Projected as a reliever when he was a prepster, he now looks like a possible four-pitch starter with a bulldog attitude.
