Bani, Dominican Republic has already produced one top-tier big league switch-hitting infielder in José Ramírez, and De Vries is looking to become the next. The teen models his game after Ramírez, a five-time MLB All-Star. Also a point guard on the basketball court, De Vries comes from a highly skilled athletic family, with his father having played for the Dominican national team.

Boasting advanced hitting ability with the chance to hit for power from both sides, De Vries has a loose natural rhythm, which gives evaluators the belief that he'll deliver 20-homer power. Advanced for his age when it comes to plate discipline, De Vries takes his walks and displays plus pitch recognition.

He's a smooth defender at shortstop and has the intangibles to stick at the position long-term. With an above-average glove and arm, his 6-foot-2 frame lends credence to the thought that he could play any infield position as he continues to develop physically. With recorded times of 4.2 seconds from home to first and 6.7 seconds in a 60-yard dash, his plus running grade should enable him to impact the game both on the basepaths and as a defender in the dirt.

The teen trains in the Dominican Republic with Lenny Pimentel, a member of MLB’s Trainer Partnership Program.

The Padres have worked the top of the international market well in recent years, picking up the No. 1-ranked talent in both 2023 (Ethan Salas) and 2024 (De Vries). As with the catcher a year before, San Diego pushed their $4.2 million shortstop to full-season ball quickly at Single-A Lake Elsinore three months after signing. De Vries held his own in the advanced assignment but really took off in the second half, posting a .996 OPS in 35 games from July 1 onward. A right shoulder strain ended De Vries' regular season in mid-August, but he continued to get work as the youngest player in the Arizona Fall League. He moved up to High-A in 2025 and represented the Padres at the All-Star Futures Game before headlining a big prospect package that brought closer Mason Miller and JP Sears to the Padres at the Trade Deadline.

A switch-hitter, De Vries already shows an exquisite knowledge of the zone and will take his walks like he's a player many years older. He needed just a little bit more exposure to California League arms before making the adjustment to their quality, and that speaks well to how he'll handle higher levels, something he continued to show in the Midwest League with low strikeout and high walk rates at the time of the trade. After getting to his power more from the right side in 2024, with seven of his 11 homers coming from that side despite far fewer plate appearances, he flipped the script in 2025, with seven of his eight homers coming left-handed before he was sent to the A’s. He has more than enough bat speed from both sides of the plate where splits aren’t a major concern.

A former point guard in basketball, the Dominican Republic native is an agile runner and efficient on the basepaths. He has the range and hands to handle shortstop well, and even though he got some looks at second base in the Fall League, he’s played shortstop exclusively this season. There's enough arm strength here to keep him on the left side of the dirt anyways. De Vries plays like a prospect hungry for challenges, which has served him well during his age-18 season.

Make that 2-for-2 for the Padres. San Diego signed the top international prospect in the 2023 class in catcher Ethan Salas and saw him climb all the way to Double-A at age 17, and the club added top 2024 prospect De Vries in January for $4.2 million. That's a sizable investment for any club -- it was the second-highest international bonus of the year -- but especially for one with just a $4,652,200 base signing pool. De Vries may not be pushed as aggressively as the advanced Salas was, but he did similarly skip over the complex leagues and head straight to Single-A Lake Elsinore this summer.

A switch-hitter, De Vries already impresses all evaluators with his pitch recognition, discipline and barrel control. He doesn't expand the zone much against pitchers of any experience level nor is he one to swing and miss much, if at all. He stands in at 6-foot-2 and 183 pounds at the time of signing, and he already has the bat speed for average power with room to add more as he matures.

De Vries has a basketball background, particularly at the point guard position, and his quickness easily translates to the diamond. He's been clocked around 6.7 seconds in the 60-yard dash, giving him plus speed for now, and his current agility works well defensively at shortstop. With at least above-average arm strength, he makes quality throws and hits his target on a line. The Padres are open to the fact that De Vries may move off shortstop in time -- as they've started to do with Jackson Merrill as he closes in on the Majors -- but the pieces are there for a potential five-tool talent at a premium position.
