Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 55 | Run: 45 | Arm: 60 | Field: 45 | Overall: 45

After Schiavone ranked third in the Sun Belt Conference with 18 homers as a James Madison junior in 2024, the Astros drafted him in the 11th round. He batted just .180/.390/.324 between two Class A stops in his first full pro season, ranking second among Minor Leaguers with 300 plate appearances with a 21 percent walk rate but also striking out 36 percent of the time. Though his walk and strikeout numbers have been similarly volatile this year, he has been one of the most productive catchers in the Minors and reached Double-A in mid-May.

Schiavone is a compilation of extremes at the plate. He rarely chases pitches while generating high-end exit velocities and good launch angles, but he also has alarming swing-and-miss rates against all type of offerings, both inside and outside the strike zone. He creates well-above-average raw power that plays from foul pole to foul pole, though it remains to be seen how his unique profile will work against more advanced pitching.

Schiavone moves better than most catchers, showing average speed at times and a knack for stealing bases that allowed him to join the 20-20 club before the All-Star break this season. He's improving behind the plate, though his receiving and blocking need more work before he's ready for the big leagues. He features plus arm strength, earns kudos for his ability to run a pitching staff and also can play a capable first base.
