Video scouting report »

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 60 | Run: 45 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50

Wolkow ranked as one of the top position prospects and a likely first-round pick in the 2024 high school class until he reclassified to this year's Draft in March 2022. He's one of the youngest and most physical prospects in this crop and reminds some scouts of Spencer Jones, the Yankees' first-rounder last July out of Vanderbilt. But he also comes with questions about his bat after mostly scuffling against older competition on the showcase circuit last summer, though he did perform well at the Area Code Games.

At 6-foot-7 and 225 pounds, Wolkow already has the strength and leverage for massive power, and he's still growing and adding muscle. But his size also comes with a naturally long left-handed stroke and swing-and-miss concerns. His swing decisions are still rudimentary. He'll miss fastballs in the strike zone, and he doesn't deal well with offspeed pitches.

Built like a tight end and athletic for his size, Wolkow takes a while to get out of the batter's box but is at least an average runner once he gets underway. He has played all four outfield and infield corners, and while he handled third base well at the Area Codes, he profiles best in right field with solid arm strength. The South Carolina recruit has a huge gap between his floor and ceiling, but it's a lofty ceiling, and he won't turn 18 until six months after the Draft.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 60 | Run: 45 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Rated as a probable first-rounder in 2024, Wolkow reclassified to the 2023 Draft during his sophomore year at a suburban Chicago high school. One of the youngest and most physical prospects in the '23 prep class, Wolkow lasted longer than expected but landed early third-round money ($1 million) in the seventh round. He tore up Rookie ball for two weeks to start his 2024 season, then slashed .241/.342/.428 with 11 homers in 76 games as the youngest regular (age 18) in the Single-A Carolina League.

Wolkow has a massive 6-foot-7, 239-pound frame with more strength and leverage than most players his age. Add in his bat speed and he has as much power upside as anyone in the Minors. He's still growing and showing some aptitude for launching balls in the air, and he could produce 40 homers annually if he makes enough contact. That's a question, however, because his size results in a naturally long left-handed stroke. He'll miss some fastballs in the strike zone and chase non-fastballs more than he should, resulting in a 40 percent strikeout rate in 2024, though he improved throughout the year and the White Sox believe he'll make adjustments as he gains experience.

Built like a tight end, Wolkow takes time to get out of the batter's box but moves well for his size and is at least an average runner underway. He played well at third base during the 2022 Area Code Games and some scouts think he could handle the hot corner, but he's more comfortable in right field and has the solid arm for the position. Club officials love his makeup, repeatedly praising his intelligence, maturity and competitive will.

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 60 | Run: 45 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Projected as a likely first-rounder in 2024, Wolkow reclassified to the 2023 Draft in March of his sophomore year at a Chicago-area high school. He lasted longer than expected before the White Sox selected him in the seventh round, though he landed top-of-the-third-round money ($1 million) to forego his commitment to South Carolina. He played briefly in Rookie ball and immediately impressed club officials with his maturity at age 17.

One of the youngest and most physical prospects in the 2023 crop, Wolkow earns comparisons to Top 100 Prospect Spencer Jones of the Yankees. His massive 6-foot-7, 239-pound body gives him the strength and leverage that can produce top-of-the-scale raw power, and he's still growing. His size adds length to his left-handed stroke and his plate discipline is a work in progress, so he swings through some fastballs in the strike zone and gets fooled by offspeed pitches.

Wolkow is built like a tight end and is athletic for his size, slow to get started out of the batter's box but displaying at least average speed once he gets going. He handled third base well at the 2022 Area Codes and some scouts believe he could make it there, but he's much more comfortable in right field and has the solid arm strength needed there. He'll be 18 throughout his first full pro season and will need time to develop, but his ceiling is as huge as his frame.
