Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 60 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50

Frey won Louisiana 2-A state titles in his final two seasons at Rosepine HS in 2021 and '22, then two College World Series championships at Louisiana State in 2023 and '25. He got just 76 at-bats in his first two years with the Tigers, in part because of a torn labrum in his right shoulder that required surgery in the summer of 2024. He didn't become a full-time starter until midway through last spring yet finished with the best batting line (.331/.420/.641) in LSU's lineup and provided several clutch hits during the postseason. After signing for $997,500 as a third-rounder, he slashed .330/.434/.470 during a month in Single-A.

Physically imposing at 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, Frey generated the highest measured bat speed in the 2025 Draft as well as some of the best exit velocities. He's a disciplined hitter who waits for pitches he can drive, and he has shown the ability to handle lefties and righties and all types of pitches. The Astros hope he can create a steeper bat path so he can elevate the ball more consistently and realize his 30-homer potential.

While he spent most of his college career as a DH, Frey is an underrated athlete who was a catcher and dual-threat quarterback in high school. A solid runner who's quicker once he gets going, he'll get the opportunity to play center field in pro ball. At worst, he projects as a right fielder with solid arm strength and perhaps more if he can lengthen his arm action.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Frey led Rosepine (La.) HS to back-to-back state 2-A championships in 2021 and '22, then added two Men's College World Series titles in three years at Louisiana State. He played sparingly in his first two years with the Tigers, making just 11 starts and collecting just 76 at-bats, then missed summer ball last year because he required surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. After he finally asserted himself as a regular midway through this season, he posted the best batting line (.331/.420/.641) in LSU's lineup before signing for $997,500 as a third-round pick.

One of the more imposing hitters in college baseball at 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, Frey is built to hit for power. He's strong and has a quick right-handed stroke to go with an affinity to driving the ball in the air, a combination that allows him to hit balls out of any part of the park. While he lacks a long track record, he's a patient hitter who has had success this year against both lefties and righties and all types of pitches.

The fact that Frey has spent the majority of his college career as a DH belies his athleticism. A former catcher and dual-threat quarterback in high school, he has solid speed and had arm strength to match before he injured his shoulder. He should be able to play right field in pro ball if his arm bounces back; he could even merit a look in center.
