Dickinson certainly had an interesting path to pro ball. He didn’t make his varsity team at Kennewick HS (Wash.) until he was a junior and headed to Utah Valley for college as a walk-on. He was a two-time All-Western Athletic Conference first-team honoree with the Wolverines and set school records with 18 homers and 32 steals in 2024. He had stints in Cape Cod and with the U.S. Collegiate National Team that summer and transferred to LSU as a junior, helping the Tigers win a Men's College World Series title while hitting .315/.458/.525 with 12 homers and a 42/40 K/BB ratio in 68 games. The Brewers took him in the sixth round and signed him for $325,000.

Batting from the right side, Dickinson looks relaxed at the plate and employs a simple right-handed swing and excellent hand-eye coordination to put lots of pitch types into play. His chase rate in his final year of college was just a tad below the MLB average, and his ability to get that bat on the ball kept strikeouts in check. His raw power is just average at best, however, and he didn’t slug much with wood bats before his move to Baton Rouge -- something worth watching in his introduction to the pros.

As an average runner with average arm strength, Dickinson bounced around a good amount defensively as a collegian with most of his looks for Utah Valley and LSU coming at second base. With other priority shortstops Jesús Made, Luis Peña and Cooper Pratt already in the system ahead of him, it’s likely Dickinson will settle in back at the keystone. Down the road, he might project best as a contact-heavy utilityman.

He controls the strike zone well, uses the entire field and has no obvious weaknesses at the plate. There are questions about how much impact he'll make with wood bats, however, because he has average raw power at best (mostly to his pull side) and slashed .182/.311/.222 between Team USA and the Cape Cod League during the summer of 2024.

He struggled at shortstop during fall practice at LSU, and his average range and arm strength are better suited for second base, where he played exclusively this spring. It was also his primary position at Utah Valley and on the Cape, where he also saw action at third base, short and left field. He may get looks at the six in pro ball, but the keystone still seems the likelier long-term destination.
