Scouting Report

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 40 | Run: 45 | Arm: 45 | Field: 45 | Overall: 45

The pandemic and a shoulder injury limited Meidroth to 32 at-bats in his first two college seasons, but he broke out in the wood-bat Northwoods League in the summer of 2021 and earned all-West Coast Conference accolades at San Diego the following spring. The Red Sox selected him in the fourth round of the 2022 Draft and signed him for a well-below-slot $272,500. He reached Double-A and led Boston farmhands with a .408 on-base percentage in his first full pro season, topped the Triple-A International League with a .437 OBP in his second, then joined the White Sox as part of the Garrett Crochet trade at the Winter Meetings in December.

Meidroth's bat-to-ball skills and strike-zone management got him drafted and stood out in his first taste of pro ball. He has a compact right-handed swing and tremendous feel for the barrel, and he rarely chases pitches out of the zone. His bat speed and strength are ordinary, however, so he only has modest pull power.

With fringy speed and arm strength, Meidroth doesn't offer much value on the bases or in the field. He's best suited for second base but primarily played third in Double-A and shortstop in Triple-A because of team needs. He can get job the done at second but lacks the arm for the hot corner and has below-average range at short.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 40 | Run: 45 | Arm: 45 | Field: 45 | Overall: 40

Because of the pandemic and a shoulder injury, Meidroth got just 32 at-bats in his first two college seasons at San Diego, but he started to catch the attention of scouts when he hit .345 with three times as many walks as strikeouts in the wood-bat Northwoods League in the summer of 2021. His hitting ability and strike-zone management earned him all-West Coast Conference honors last spring before the Red Sox signed him for a well-below-slot $272,500 in the fourth round. His 22-game pro debut (mostly in Single-A) featured more of the same, as he batted .316 with 14 walks vs. 11 whiffs.

Somewhat of a college version of Boston 2020 first-rounder Nick Yorke, Meidroth is a righty-hitting second baseman whose ability to put the bat on the ball outshines the rest of his tools and limited athleticism. He has excellent feel for the barrel and the strike zone, using a compact stroke and disciplined approach to spray line drives to all fields. His bat speed and strength are ordinary, so he may not deliver more than 12-15 homers per season, but his on-base skills could land him at the top of a lineup.

Meidroth's fringy speed and arm strength may restrict him to second base, where he's a sure-handed but not especially rangy defender. He may have a better chance to play second on a regular basis than Yorke, though Meidroth has spent most of his time at third base since joining Yorke in Double-A. He lacks the arm for the hot corner, so left field may be his best fallback position.
