There were two Indiana natives on the World Cup-winning US 18-and-under national team in 2022: Max Clark and Tilly. While Clark went third overall to the Tigers in the 2023 Draft, Tilly was unselected as MLB Pipeline’s No. 208 prospect in the class and headed to Auburn instead. He pitched primarily out of the bullpen in his two years in the SEC and sported a 5.48 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 46 innings as a Draft-eligible sophomore last year. The Mets took him in the seventh round and signed him for above slot at $397,500 to keep him from heading back to school.
The Mets have early interest in developing Tilly as a starter because of his interesting pitch mix. His fastball sits at 92-94 mph, touching 97, and because of the average velocity, he was willing to go liberally to his secondaries in his final season on campus. Since his amateur days, Tilly has earned praise for the high spin rates on his low-80s slider, and he’s developed his mid-80s splitter into arguably an even better pitch, one with enough dip and movement to cause lefties fits. Tilly also worked in another high-spin curveball in the mid 70s with Auburn but saved it mostly for early counts.
Tilly walked 13.4 percent of the batters he faced in his two years at Auburn -- a rate that would keep anyone in the bullpen early in their collegiate career -- but the Mets believe there’s untapped pitchability there, especially if they can tame some of his spinnier options. There’s a good chance Tilly would have gotten starting looks as junior anyways, and now that can happen under the eye of a New York organization that has specialized in pitching development in recent years.

Indiana placed two players on the U.S. national team that won the 18-and-under World Cup last September, with Tilly joining Max Clark, a projected top-five-overall pick. After throwing 20 touchdown passes as a junior quarterback, Tilly gave up football to commit to Team USA. He capped his high school career with 35 strikeouts in three playoff starts and could factor into the top five rounds.
Tilly flashes a plus slider that operates in the low 80s with more than 3,000 rpm at its best, and he also has a high-spin curveball in the upper 70s. His fastball sits at 90-92 mph and tops out at 94, with his command of his heater more notable than its life. He utilizes an 82-85 mph splitter as a changeup, and it dives at the plate but doesn't consistently land for strikes.
Tilly is strong and athletic, though he's also a physically mature 19-year-old without much projection remaining. Scouts like the way he throws strikes and competes, and his deep repertoire and feel for pitching give him a higher floor than most prep pitchers. If he follows through on his commitment to Auburn, he'll be Draft-eligible as a sophomore in 2025.
