Scouting Report

2025

The Yankees considered taking Winquest with their seventh-round pick in 2022 but opted for Cam Schlittler instead, then saw the Cardinals pounce on the Texas-Arlington product before they could get him in the eighth round. Back issues cost Winquest most of the 2024 season, but he finished last year with a 3.19 ERA in eight Double-A starts. When St. Louis left him unprotected, New York grabbed him in December by exercising a Rule 5 Draft selection for the first time since it took Brad Meyers in 2011.

Winquest's best pitch is a big-breaking upper-70s curveball that opponents batted .143 against with an outlandish 46 percent swing-and-miss rate last season. His mid-90s fastball and low-80s slider are more hittable, though the Yankees excel at helping pitchers upgrade their stuff and see opportunities with those two offerings. He has a fringy cutter that sits around 90 mph and rarely uses a changeup.

Winquest employs a three-quarters arm slot and gets down the mound well, creating some extension and deception. He has decent control and command and his future may be more as a curveball-heavy reliever than a back-of-the-rotation starter. If the Yankees can't keep him on their big league roster throughout 2026, they'll have to run him through waivers and offer him back to the Cardinals for half of his $100,000 draft price.
