When the Mets lost Jacob deGrom to free agency ahead of the 2023 season, they gained the 134th overall pick and used it to take Ewing and sign him for above slot at $675,000 out of an Ohio high school. The former Alabama commit had a roller-coaster first full season -- dominating the Florida Complex League, needing some time to warm up to Single-A -- but it was all about setting the foundation for a breakout 2025. Ewing slashed .315/.401/.429 with three homers in 124 games across the Single-A, High-A and Double-A levels in his age-20 season. His 70 steals (in 81 attempts) were fifth-most in the Minor Leagues.

Ewing has many ways he can contribute offensively and, increasingly, overall on the diamond. Using a straight-on stance with a leg lift in his load, he cut his strikeout rate 10 percentage points down to 18.6 year over year, and he was able to get the bat on every pitch type in the zone in ’25, finishing with an 88 percent in-zone contact rate at High-A and Double-A. He was much more of a slap-to-all-fields type in search of that contact, and while his exit velocities can pop, they don’t lead to homers because they come on the ground or on a line.

That’s fine for now, considering Ewing is a plus-plus runner that will pick up his extra bases other ways, and his combination of swing decisions and hard-hit spray can still get him on base. His wheels have helped his transition from second base to center field, and his instincts have improved with the extra work to the point where he could be a future plus defender. Getting that raw power in games would unlock five-tool status on Ewing’s path toward Queens.

Selected with the 2023 compensation pick the Mets received for losing Jacob deGrom to free agency, Ewing signed above slot for $675,000 out of an Ohio high school rather than head to Alabama. New York slowrolled it with Ewing out of the gate in his first full season with an opening in the Florida Complex League, but he proved he was too good for the Rookie-level circuit quickly with a .422 on-base and .571 slugging percentage through 19 games. Ewing joined Single-A St. Lucie in June and got off to a rough start, but he managed a .277/.419/.436 line with three homers in 27 games from Aug. 1 onward.

Measuring in at 5-foot-11, the left-handed-hitting Ewing didn’t expand the zone much, even during the tough times in the Florida State League. His final chase rate ranked in the 83rd percentile for the Single-A circuit despite his youth in his age-19 campaign. He did struggle against breaking stuff even in the zone, however, and that led to a 29.1 percent strikeout rate over his 71 FSL games. He's done a much better job at making contact in 2025, leading to a breakout at both St. Lucie and High-A Brooklyn. Ewing can run into balls with solid exit velocities, and he has enough pullside pop that he could be average in the power category in time.

Ewing can really get going underway with impressive Sprint Speeds, and he should be a threat to opposing defenses on balls put in the gaps. Initial questions about Ewing’s arm strength -- along with a loaded middle-infield group in the lower Minors -- pushed the Buckeye State native to center field, where he can better make use of his wheels, but his arm can work from the grass for now. He’ll still mix in second base and the corner spots occasionally, but his value is in center where the Mets are pleased with how his athleticism has translated at this early stage.

The Mets received the 134th pick in the 2023 Draft as compensation for losing Jacob deGrom to the Rangers in free agency, and the club used that selection to take Ewing out of Springboro (Ohio) High School. The Alabama commit signed for well-above slot with a $675,000 bonus, roughly equal to slot money in the third round. New York slow-played the teenager in his first full season, opening him in the Florida Complex League in May, and pushed him to Single-A St. Lucie in June once it was clear he was too good for the complex. Ewing ran into growing pains in the Florida State League and seems ticketed back there for his age-20 season in 2025.

Standing in at 5-foot-11, Ewing’s best hitting trait at all levels so far has been his unwillingness to expand the zone, including in the FSL where he’s run a chase rate in the 80th percentile. He has been beat in the zone often, however, and he’s struggled with the velocity that comes with full-season ball. On the optimistic side, he’s lifted and pulled the ball fairly well -- an approach that should get his power to play easier as he matures and catches up to pitching with more exposure. He did go deep five times in only 19 FCL games before his promotion.

Ewing has been about an average runner but can get moving underway, a helpful tool on balls to the gaps. Drafted as an infielder, his light arm was going to keep him at second base, but the Mets have given him ample looks at center field this summer. He was very much drafted as a project, while his early development will come in fits and starts, there’s hope for a utility man who can contribute up the middle.
