Bolivar certainly caught attention when he went 5-for-12 with a pair of doubles for Venezuela at the 2022 WBSC U15 World Cup just days before his 14th birthday. A little more than three years later, he was back in the spotlight when he signed with the Tigers for $2,297,500 in January 2026. That was the highest bonus given out to a catcher during the most recent international signing cycle. Bolivar has hit the ground running in the pros with a strong first showing in the Dominican Summer League during his age-17 campaign.
When Bolivar signed, it was already easy to dream on above-average power production from him down the line, and he’s put on a good show slugging-wise in his early days of the DSL. If he continues to flex muscle at the plate, he’d continue to be a strong fit in an organization that knows a thing about power-first backstops with Josue Briceño and Thayron Liranzo already in the pipeline. There were some pre-signing concerns from scouts about the length in Bolivar’s swing and how it’d affect his ability to make contact against pro pitching, and his strikeout rate has been on the high side for a big talent in the DSL.
Should he continue to fill out, Bolivar will walk the tight rope of packing on power while maintaining his current level of athleticism behind the plate. For now, he has a good shot at sticking there, especially with plus arm strength also in tow. Young catchers can have wide error bars given all that needs to happen in their development, but there are enough tools to dream of Bolivar becoming a future starter in the bigs.
